1and1 charged $240 because of bandwidth usage

Seeing this made me go though my 8-95.com account. I have 12gb of transfer and I can (and have) limited what each domain uses.
You may want to check if 1and1 has a limiter like that.

The free for three was 500MB\5GB. 😉

I've got around 200MB to last me through the end of the month 🙁

Sorry I meant I have 2 free accounts - one 500MB (space) account, and one 2GB (space) account.

Yeah, I'm using my 6 monther to limp along until the 31st 🙁

All cPanel accounts are usually set up to limit. 1and1 on the other hand, makes it so that you can easily go over if you don't watch yourself. To limit it you can go into your billing settings and set your max charge to $0, but by default they will allow you to go over, and then gladly charge you for it.

It was the first thing I changed when I logged in 😉

Good, the OP didn't 😉.

I'm just posting it in response to Freejack2, and to warn others... But if those others have an extra $250 they should gladly dish it out to 1and1.

Wow, thanks, I didn't realize that.
However, my site doesn't consume any huge amount of bandwidth, so I'm not that worried.
Still <changes it>

Hmm. I set a friend up for that "three years free hosting" deal with 1and1.com when it was posted way back, and my friend used it to host a video-game video that I helped him put together, and it was locked within a couple of weeks due to bandwidth exceeded for that month. Never saw anything about needed CC details to unlock it though, that's probably what happened. They didn't automatically unlock it the next month either, and my friend (who is not very computer literate), hasn't been able to use it since. But I did set the overage cost limit to a very low amount (I think $1.00) when I helped him set it up, so I don't think that they would go after him for charges.

But.. for 200+ GB/mo... an overage charge of $240 isn't exactly "unreasonable", considering that the free transfer limit per mo is supposed to be 5GB. If you don't give them your CC details up-front though, how are they going to be able to charge you that?

At least they're not as bad as Prohosting - sending an "invoice" for services advertised as FREE, and then sending followup e-mails threatening me if I didn't pay them. When I realized that they had NO personal details on me, I just ignored them. But that's a sleazy way to do things. At least 1and1.com is up-front about being charged on the free account for overages.
