So after months and months of thinking it over I came to terms with keeping my Camry and waiting until I was out of College to buy a new car. I've decided to just invest some money in keeping this thing running until then.

Anyway, it's the 4 Cylinder CE version, a few hundred miles past 96k.

So far I've:
Oil (Filter, new oil, etc)
Replaced front brake pads
Replacing back shoes (right term?) and putting new springs on (I've got all the parts to do it just haven't had time to do it...)
Put new tires and bought some cheapo rims for it (they look a damn sight better then the stock hubcaps)
Need to replace front driver side window motor (need to buy part, can do myself)
Brand new battery (5 months ago at least)

Other then what I've done or list as planning to do, what else should be done to keep this thing running and running well? Money really isn't a problem and I've got access to most every tool I'll need and expertise, if not I'm not afraid to take it to a shop.

Lately I've noticed a rattling sound coming from the engine, no idea what it is, anyone have any ideas?

Oh and does anyone have any secrets to getting oil smudges/stains off the paint?

Btw: If something should be done regularly or at a certain mile interval, chances are it wasn't done. My mother never really took good care of it and when she became disabled it sat around for about a year before even getting turned on again.

First, check out your belts/hoses and motor mounts. You can inspect these visually, but these are easy to do if needed. Go to a junkyard, and camry parts should be alright to find for the minor stuff like the wiper or window motor, etc. You may also want to look at your grease points and go up under your car with a grease gun to top these off. It also couldn't hurt to grease the door hinges, etc. It really helps on the wear/tear. Also check your air filter. Chances are it hasn't been replaced in a LONG time. When you have a car sitting up for a while, it isn't uncommon to find something nesting around in the housing, too. Shocks are easy to do yourself, so while you are putting the new springs on, that would be an excellent time to get those taken care of.

Keep an eye on suspension, I dont' know what year range it was but they had a bout of crappy suspension that would fail quite regularly. My dad's 04 is new enough to not have that but he found when looking at cars that the older ones tended to have that issue.

At 96K you are past due for a timing belt/water pump.

Also check/replace sparkplugs, fuel filter, PCV valve, trans fluid, etc... just the general stuff.
