1997 Maxima Issues....

Hey guys,

OK I bought a great used 1997 Maxima GLE from a neighbor, just need a few things...

#1 my antenna, sigh, there's no antenna - apparently it got ripped off - here's the nub:

I bought a replacement antenna on eBay - however it did not screw in - I tried plumbers tape - however the base piece did not even reach the threads - maybe the black piece in the pictures is stripped? Should I buy a new power antenna piece? I see they are ~30 on ebay - or could I shave it down and have some sort of replacement in my trunk or window or anywhere else? I'd much rather not have an antenna sticking out (motorized or not).

#2, i need new wiper blades - what are the best to get for this car?

#3, i need a new battery - my car will sometimes have trouble starting in the cold, any suggestions? I know nothing about cars/batteries so are there different sockets, etc. things I should know?

#4, my drivers side - sideview mirror is cracked up (see http://picasaweb.google.com/lh...204mg?feat=directlink) - I'm not sure if it is heated, I turned on the rear defroster and it didn't get any warmer after 2 minutes or so - is that the test usually? Nothing says so in my manual, and my neighbor didn't know. Either way - would I be able to buy a replacement non-heated side view mirror and install it without a problem - or are the two not interchangeable? I don't care about the heated mirror really...

#3 you can go buy a new battery at Autozone, Pepboys, Advance Auto Parts, etc - they'll have different levels (CCA), can recommend and even do the installation for you should u need it.

#4 I bought an OEM mirror for my Infiniti I30 (mechanically the same) on ebay, had it painted and installed for about $100. I don't think that any of this generation's cars were heated.

Heated mirrors typically have the little symbol printed on them to let you know they are heated.

that should be the entire mirror including the wires/plugs.
about the same price I paid - it should be all black.

I guess you could ask your nearby Nissan dealer for the paint code and go from there. It's probably easier said than done.

the heated mirror on the maxima has no icon nor a switch, it is paired up with the rear defroster, best way to check it is hit the button and touch the working mirror in 5 mins to see if its hot. a second way is once you have the door panel off, there will be 2 plugs for heated and only 1 for non. Best way to go about this is ebay and grab a heated one, that way if you end up having non heated then you just have a loose plug..

the GLE has a cold weather package, heated seats and mirrors and higher CCA battery. 90% of the time if you have heated seats you have heated mirrors.

wipers and battery can be generic, easy fit.

since you have a GLE, you have the bose system and the bose has 2 antenna, the mast one that broke off and then their are lines in the rear defroster as well. I had mines broken but i got great FM reception. the power antenna is only needed for AM.

I want to get AM. Is there any way to run another power antenna in the trunk or window if I shave the antenna?

window is out of the question, in order to get AM you need a physical antenna.

there are ways... i dont recall any off the topic of my head.

maxima.org is a maxima forum that i'm part of, they should be able to help you, since its not a uncommon problem.
