Hello, I don't know much if anything about subaru's but I need a car I can use one or two times a week for the next 9 months. Should I buy this car? How reliable are subaru's? Thanks

Also I just saw a 1995 Dodge neon with a new engine w/28,000 miles for about 800. What do you guys think about that?

The Neon probably needs a head gasket.

I don't know much about the Subaru, but they are supposed to be reliable.
Once you are down into the sub $1000 category, you might find a real winner with a lot of miles that has been maintained well, or one with no maintaince and low miles. You are really taking your chances. (I've done the same thing though...)

If that Neon mileage is right, go for it!

subarus are rock solid. The engine is good for 400k + if maintained.

As long as the body looks decent, i'd pick it up.

I'd think you could look around for a civic with similar miles and price range (and hopefully also well maintained), and you could still be confident it'd last you at least another 200K miles.

Without seeing it, nobody here can make a recommendation. It could be fine, it could need many expensive repairs, or it may be somewhere in between. Take it to a mechanic if you don't know how to evaluate a used car.

If I had the car, a 20 minute test drive would tell me all I needed to know--but not everybody has the knowledge and practice I have.

BZZZZT

At this age/mileage/price range, brand and model means next to nothing. The previous owner (and how well he took care of it) means everything.
