It's Ford's 3.8L V6 and it was recently semi-rebuilt with new head gasket and replacement heads. They also replaced the wires and plugs and battery wires.

The engine does fine normally, but every now and then it will stutter a bit. Overall, it just runs crappy. At idle, it kinda shakes a bit, but the idle is not low.

Should I try higher octane gas? It has 113K miles, and I usually use 87. Will 89 or 91 help it run better?

NO! Not unless you're using 87 and it was designed for Premium.

I'll take it back to them if it keeps up. It's been getting better the longer I've had it back.

Take it back to the company you got it done at. They should check it out for free, just make sure to let them know that if it isnt something they already fixed, you would get it done there (thats always key)

EDIT-- May be something in your fuel lines like fuel pump?
