N'sync was 2000s, 90s would have been Color Me Bad (early 90s) or Backstreet Boys (late 90s).

I think a lot of 90s rock that would later be classified as 'Grunge' was being called alternative rock when it was new. I think as time passed, most rock from that era got lumped into that same descriptor, even if it wouldn't have been when it was newer.

They're first album and top 20 single in the US came out in 1997.

Those were alternative rock bands that just happened to go pretty mainstream.

they're not a band but a singing group.

Backstreet Boys were formed in 1993. Took a bit of time to hit it, but were gaining traction in Europe by 1995-1996.

N'SYNC was formed later but followed a similar path of getting a hold in Europe first and then making big in the American market in the late 90s. N'Sync was done by 2002 and Timberlake pursued a solo career. Some would say JC Chasez was the better singer...but Timberlake had the recognition and the publicity of being Britney's boyfried.

It's just that all the "Max Martin 1.0 acts" hit their "everyone recognizes" apex the U.S around 1998-1999, including Britney Spears, but the boy bands are actually older.

90's was a weird mix of Rock genres:
Early 90's Grunge
Mid 90's of Alternative Rock
Late 90's of NuMetal
