1990 Toyota Tercel

Other than being a gutless wonder, is there any inherent problems?

Might pick one up. I need a fuel saver.

New clutch, water pump.. Don't know about the timing belt. Also don't know if it's the 4 speed or the 5 speed.

Body is straight and the interior looks to be in good condition. Good tires. Needs tags.

$950.

Went and looked at an '86 Civic hatchback earlier. I hope i don't kick myself for not taking it. Had a new timing belt, water pump, ignition coil, and valve cover gasket(750$ in work - had receipts). The seats were pretty torn up, body was Ok. Was $775.

The 38MPG part would've been awesome... Ah well.

How many miles on the tercel?

Not sure.. Probably a lot, lol...

Will find out more about it on Monday.

Doesn't sound like a bad deal. Have a mechanic you trust check it out before buying though.

The tercel isn't bad, the model you speak of looks odd, but if that doesn't bother you, then it should be a pretty decent car.

It looked like a normal 2dr car to me...

Like this

Edit: Well, thats a Canadian site, but you get the idea. Wasn't the funny looking hatchback.

you can get a late 80's camry for $500 or less. they are solid as rocks.

a $500 car that is solid as a rock?

Something doesnt sound right about that.

My '91 Camry with 175k and minor rust went for $850 without an issue. For a NE car it's in great shape, mechanically sound, just needs tires (summers). It's had a new timing belt, new radiator, new flex pipe, new brakes, everything like that, so it's good for another 50-60k miles before anything major will go. If that Tercel is in similar shape, then $900 isn't a bad deal.

Hey, don't knock All-Trac. The Celica All-Trac was a particularly neat car...

😉

you see plenty of them at surf break car parks here, the 4wd/awd wagons. Not as many as the little Suby Leone 4wd wagons tho.

Go back and get the Honda. NOW.

😀

I do admit that I'm tempted to call and see if he still has it tomorrow... But....I dunno...I have more than 775$ to spend, so I can't help but feel I could get something better for a little more.

It's not like the Honda would have more get up and go than the Tercel... I'm mainly concerned about fuel economy at this point.

Can't really get much better than 38MPG..

Although.... looking through fueleconomy.gov...

'86 Honda Civic HF's get 57mpg highway and 52mpg city.

That'd be some sh!t.. being able to go to work and back on 1 gallon of gas. :Q

I had a tercel wagon and it rocked. All of 70 HP on a good day, maxed out around 80 downhill with a tailwind.

I beat the piss out of that car. Drove it though corn fields (complete with corn), 3' deep water holes, had 5 people in it, over curbs, etc. All with 190k miles. Broke 2 half shafts doing neutral drops ($40 each IIRC), and bent one of the rear wheel suports doing a j-turn at 30 and slamming into a curb (bent it back with the 50 ton press at school).

Finaly toasted the transmission while trying to hop a bottle. The trans was only $300 fromt he junk yard, but I decided to get an s-15 jimmy instead.

I miss that car 🙁

I've always wanted one.. but heh...

Edit: Regarding the Tercel.. was A/C even an option?

I was really hoping for a car with AC, but.. I guess it wouldn't be the end of the world if it didn't have it.

Those Tercels last a long time, especially the ones built in the 80s and early 90s. I still see them on the road.

A guy I work with has a Tercel, it's the hatchback kind, it's ugly as sin but it runs.
