1969 Honda CB750 @131k

While I'm surfing the web, I find an article about a Honda CB750 prototype for sale. I read the article and then read the ebay info. Even as a guy who isn't into motorcycles, I gotta say it was pretty interesting. So, I emailed the information to my brother and I figured that I'd post it here:

Back story: I'm not really into motorcycles. But, my brother is. Even when I was a kid he had a pair of Honda 70's for us to ride around on. As we got older, there was a Bultaco 125 to use (I only got to ride that once).

Well, that brother had a Honda 750 and my other brother had a Honda 550-4. Years later, my brother just told me that he bought a Honda 650 off ebay. I can't remember which model designation it is (CS?) but it is the one with the V engine that is longitudal (not transverse).

Yeah, those sand cast models were only made for 1 or 2 years. They are very desirable as are the parts but man that's the highest I've ever seen one going for.

It's true that that bike and the 750cc engine that powered it in particular changed the motorcycling world, they were fast, fun, affordable, reliable machines. That being said paying north of $130K for one is kinda nutty IMO but whoever winds up buying it could probably re-sell it in five years and make 20-30K profit (provided it's kept in the condition it's in now). I'd bet those who sent the other 3 to the bone-yard are deeply regretting not realizing what they had on their hands and what it would eventually be worth..

Yeah, those sand cast models were only made for 1 or 2 years....

This is one of the 4 prototypes. So, there are more sand cast parts then even the early production bikes had.

The guy who is selling this bike recently sold a very early bike (frame # was lower than 20) for $95k. I can't imagine spending that on a bike, but again, I'm not big into motorcycles. I did find the story entertaining though.

Man this brings back memories. In 69 i was a wanabe gearhead at 13 years old. We had a small mom and pop honda shop 2 blocks from my house. I made such a nuisance of myself there that the allowed me to do pdi's on the new inventory. I pdi'd the first three wheeler in the shop. Am I old or what?

Good lordy those prices are insane. I could understand it for racing prototypes but cheap reliable people movers? Same goes for the scooters.... I don't get it.....

FWIW I love honda bikes too but they have always been compromised appliance-like bikes, not Triumphs, Aprillias, Ducatis, etc.

FWIW I love honda bikes too but they have always been compromised appliance-like bikes, not Triumphs, Aprillias, Ducatis, etc.

The people bidding on this are not looking to profit. They are either wealthy gearheads or NPBs.

You couldn't be more wrong about the CB750. It is hands down one of the most important motorcycles in the history of motorcycles. As far as street bikes go it was a revolutionary bike that changed motorcycling forever. And it almost spelled the death of Triumph.

This was not a good motorcycle, it was a great motorcycle... probably one of the greatest motorcycles ever made. Definitely in the top 5.

I check CL once in a while, the old Honda CB's still fetch a good $$, doesn't matter if it's a 750, 550-4, 350, all of them are expensive considering their age.

So do I. I doubt I'll ever buy one but I like to see what they are going for and what people have done to them. Lot of café chops out there which are cool but it reduces the number of original unmolested models and I can't help but think that will drive the prices up eventually.

Only ones worth anything are the '78 and earlier CBs. If you see anything '79 and on I wouldn't bother with it.

Yea, many have been converted into "bobber's", ugh, what a waste of a fine motorcycle that didn't need any modifications. A few that are listed usually will say "needs carb work" which to me is a no-go as a lot of big problems can be covered up by "carb issues" LOL..
