when a secretary buzzes into the office that you have a call do you hear a buzzer type sound and then the secretary on the speakerphone or just the secretary and no buzzer anywhere?

The buzzer means there is a choice to answer or not on the receiving side

It probably varies by system. If it buzzed, I think it would be before the secretary spoke.

If I remember correctly, you push on that arm half way to activate the intercom, if you push it all the way down it buzzes.

You decide to answer or not, if not, secretary/phone operator tells caller you're not available/present or busy, asks who it is, phone# for call back or even better ask what the call is for.

I think the buzz is just to alert you of the incoming intercom call. That way if you are talking or doing something else it catches your attention so you can listen. Where I work whenever they make an announcement there is always a beep before. Same idea I guess.

Actually dumb fuck, someone already said that the secretary can call in say the who is on the phone and then have it trigger a buzz and flashing light after they make the transfer, this would cause your dumb ass to pick it up. In the event you don't pick it up the effect would be it would bounce back to the secretary who would then take a number.
