Well, just remember you're not only paying for the actual product, but brand reputation, reliablity, and service. Up until recently, Samsung has been reguarded as a dismal company, and most of their product were sub par to say the least (how bout their initial DVD players). Sure they have a great product, and maybe they're turning the corner, but a company like Sony is generally regarded a a premier company due to there craftmanship and service (I know some people will complain, but overall...) and a company like Iiyama specializes in monitors, and I'me pretty sure that is their only product. when you can dedicate that kind of attention to a single product line, and feel confident enough about it to offer a standard 6 year warranty (and you can buy an extension), there is going to be a little more paid at the front door. BTW, the i90A does not have a USB hub. Considering all this, I had a choice to make when buying my monitor (which I just did a week ago), and regardless of the hype the Samsung's have drawn, I made the decision to shell out a few more $ for the Iiyama. P.S. I wish it was $79 too!!! but really, with shipping included, $479 really isn't that bad.

nordic i have a hitachi cm-715 19" it has perfect text and sharp color. you are right shadow mask=sharp text sharp color. trinitron=so so text but rich vivid color perhaps some would say better than shadow mask. I love my monitor bought it at buy.com for $300.00. the 715 is the permanent replacement for the cm-751 which won 19" monitor of the year 1999,beating all the trinitron monitors including sony! for sharp text and good sharp color buy the cm-751 it cant be beat.ps---- .22 dot pitch the sharpest I could find! paun--------------------

I was thinking of the Hitachi too.

Probably will go that way since text is most important.

My friend is returning the Samsung he got yesterday.

The text looks like crap. Must be a bad monitor, because I can't imagine anything being that bad yet still get good reviews.

I was surprised that the Hitachi gets rated higher than the aperture grills in a couple mags.

It looks like I'll probably get the 772 though since I occassionally need 1600x1200 and I can't stand any refresh rate below 85Hz. Actually, I might be OK with 80Hz on some monitors but I've never seen anything between 75 & 85.

Oh, Paun btw, the .22 dot pitch is horizontal.

The Samsung 955 & 900IFT have a .20 horizontal, but after seeing my friend's Samsung, I don't know if I want to go there. Even though I know it's a defective one, it scares me away.

Totally untrue. they been winning all kinda awards and accolades since the day of good ole 17GLSi, sounds like you been living under a rock :p what about their ram? they are ranked right up there with micron and no japanese manufacturer comes even close. they make crappy printers and dvd players tho, but you are DEAD wrong about monitors. btw, sony is notorious for cheap packaging and subpar warranty, ask LXi

Well, I was speaking about Samsung in general, not their monitors. Believe, there prices are so cheap because they have been producing top quality equipment. yeah, they've hit it right with their new line of monitors, but don't tell me they have always had top notch monitors. I would bet 99% of the samsung posts on anands forums have been in the last 6 months. Befor etheir current line, they were NOT know for great monitors. As fas as Sony packaging goes, I've bought 3, so I can just ask myself. I don't know how to judge packaging, except for the fact that all three arrievd in perfect condition. (and I'm not even hyping the Sony's in this thread... I'm Iiyama 4life...:))

um... samsung has been recognized as one of the greatest ever since days of GLSi, which is way back in the time like 4-5 years ago before this forum came to an existence...

Well. I'm not impressed by Samsung much.

My friend is a reseller and ordered a Samsung 900NF as a demo model through their reseller partner program. You'd think they'd make sure you'd have a nice monitor to show off and he gets that piece of junk that has really blurry, "jittery" text.

I guess I'll ask him how Samsung handles it and decide from there.

sorry, i dont like flame wars either... but agree with me on one thing, you think AMD CEO is a nice guy for selling faster cheaps for less? or do you think ATI CEO is a nice guy for selling a feature packed card for less? IMO likes of sony and llama make good stuff, but they wanna ride their popularity and rip you off with that advantage.

valid argument, but I'll have to disagree with you on that point too (of course). while I am an die-hard AMDer, I can honestly say that the Pentium 4 is in and of itself is a better quality chip than the Athlon. The architecture in the pentium 4 is far more elaborate and more expensive to produce. However, Intel erred in thinking people were going to pay more for a product that is not useful today. Most hardware/software does not take advantage of its power, and the products that everyone uses currently (like office), work better on anthlons and even P3's. AMD is a better chip for this reason, it performs under today's standards better than the P4. If AMD and Intel never came out with another chip, and the current ones remained the status quo, in a few years, the pentium 4 would take over the market (my opinion). However, as long as AMD stays a step ahead of Intel, they will continue to gain market share. Monitors, on the other hand, really have not changed drastically over the same period. so basically cost reflects 1)quality of parts, 2)warranty & service, & 3) to an extent reputation. But while you can make an argument that Sony is living off its reputation from other, dissimilar products, Iiyama only make monitors, so their reputation is based solely on their product. That repuation came from somewhere.... ok, that's my rant....not yet done... don't get me wrong, Samsung DF or NF monitors are a good solution for the price, but I really don't think any non bias comparison based on everything other than price would put the Samsung ahead or the Iiyama (or sony)

Also, along the same lines as my AMd/Intel comment, ATI is inferior to Nvidia in atleast driver support (no one can disagree with me on that). Most will tell you that Nvidia product are superior to ATI in overall fuctionality too. (that can be argued to an extent, but obviously the market agrees with me. Nvidia was the top video chip maker 3 years ago, so their status came as the result of something)

I think I'm going with a high end shadow mask and now I'm going to decide between the Samsung 900IFT and the Hitachi CM772. Any other really good shadow masks to consider?

I would just like to comment that I have a economics background and work in the finacial sector now, so that is where my economic theory is coming from. On the computing/tech side, I'm a dabble/intermediate at best, so my analyzation of the Pentium4/Athlon doesn't have alot of backing except from what I've read and heard (and I tend to take it to heart, since most of these people are more technically apt and very big fans of AMD)

Go with a Dell P991, as far as i read, and from my own experience, you cant buy a better monitor, and you can get one on their factory outlet for under 400. I believe the sony equivialent is the G400, but its a falt screen trinitron tube. I worked in the lab next to the monitor lab at Dell, and ive seen about every conceivable monitor, and i have yet to see a 19 inch that even comes close

How about Cornerstone?

I've heard good things and seen good reviews and they seem to be like Iiyama in that they specialize in monitors only.

I take it that they're a direct seller only, right?

Also, don't they use Hitachi tubes?

If you want to purchase a Cornerstone product through the normal distribution channel no problem. Ingram Micro is our distributor and your local reseller should be able to get it for you. If you want to buy direct go to Monitorsdirect.com our online store.

We use Hitachi tubes on all of our product with the exception of the c910, it uses a Samsung tube.
