I just bought a 19" Samsung 955 monitor. I set the rest to 1152x864 @ 85Hz. There's a little bit of "blinking" like it was set to 72Hz. Even if I go to 1024x768 @ 85. Is this normal on this size of a monitor? It didn't do it on my 17.

Are refresh rates like that bad for your eyes?

I have a 19" NEC FE991SB running at 1152x864@85Hz and I don't see any "blinking". Have you tried other video cards or other video drivers?

It just depends on the person. I can see the difference in 75 and 85, 85 and 100, and 100 and 120. 120 is the most comfortable for me, but I've never seen anything higher than that.

Put it at whatever refresh rate is comfortable for you.

Can you check your monitor to make sure it's really at 85? Mine has a diagnostic mode where it tells me what resolution, V-Refresh, and H-Refresh it's at.

Yep, it's 85Hz. It's brand new. The card is a 9800 Pro with the Cat 3.9 drivers and the Samsung drivers are updated too. There was no flickering on my old 17".

Is it actually bad if I uncheck Hide refresh rates my monitor can't handle and use one higher?

I have the same monitor. The 955 seems to do that from what I have heard from others who have it as well as my own experiences. It gets all flickery on the edges of the monitor only, right? Also, the convergence gets a little crappy as you get further from the center of the monitor.

Out of curiosity, can you get your res up to 1600x1200? It supposedly could do it at 60hz, but when I try I only can see like 1/4th the screen on both the desktop and in games at that resolution.

Nope, I have to scroll to see the rest of the screen. It flickers every where. It's like it's running at 72Hz.

What does it say its running on the "displays" tab of the advanced display properties? (next to the monitor icon)
