19" Monitor Question

Recently, my 19" monitor has begun to "degauss" on it's own. I have no idea why but I assume it's due to a defective piece somewhere inside as I've ruled out interferance from exterior devices. It only seems to do it after being on for awhile so I guess I'm in the market for a new monitor. Now, I figure I can scrounge up about $300 or so so I'm looking for a quality monitor at an affordable price. I've searched around a bit and found a Hitachi CM715 19" monitor for $271 + shipping. After checking a review site the only negative they seem to have is the price (which seems decent to me for a .22mm dpi monitor).

I was wondering if you all could recommend a few decent monitors or deals that you're aware of? I most likely won't be making the purchase for another week or so but need to research the info now. Do you like Hitachi? Do you have a better recommendation? I currently have a KDS VS-195 and have only have it about 2.5 years, so I'm a bit weary of buying another one of their products. My other PC has a Samsung 900SL which has a "dead" pixel so I'm shying away from that company as well. I know Sony makes great monitors but they are a bit pricey.

Any and all recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know why you think the choices are good and why you think mine isn't (if that's the case). Thanks in advance, you all have really helped me in the past and it's saved me alot!

I can quite happily recommend ILLIYAMA (sp?) monitors - nice prices & good resolutions with excellent refresh-rates & dot.pitch ratings at a very nice price.

I can't remember the current prices, as the last one I bought was a 17" back in 1999 - so yo will have to check. They have (had?) a nice 3-year on-site warranty as well, not that I ever needed it, but it was a nice bonus.

Hope that's some help. :)

You are shying away from Samsung? That could be a shame because the 900NF 19" is one sweeet monitor indeed, and very well recommended around here...

Wow, for a 19" that cheap, I would go with the Cornerstone Technology monitor that's so heavily praised at PC World. My second choice for a cheap 19" would be that Hitachi you're looking at.

If you want great value for the price, go with the Samsung 900NF (about $100 more than what you're looking to spend). I won't even mention the Sony FD Trinitron CRTs since you're not looking to spend that much--also, shy away from "other" FD Trinitron monitors.

If your KDS is only 2.5 years old; why not just have them replace it under their 3 year warranty?

Never registered it and figured they'd not accept RMAs w/o that info. I could be mistaken however.

As for the cornerstone, I've never heard of that brand. How's their quality? The Hitachi I'm looking at has .22dpi which is even better than what I currently have. As for Samsung, I'm really not that impressed with the 900sl. My other PC has one and the colors just seem "dull" compared to the KDS I have right now. Keep the suggestions coming though, I really appreciate the help. I'm gonna be looking into the cornerstone one that was mentioned too.

I would recommend Samsung, but if you are prepared to spend more, I would urge towards the Sony G400.

I'm n osure what the 900SL is...but the 900NF rocks. Every bit as good as a Sony G400 and 2/3s the price. Very sharp, very well defined colours. Fantastic tube....I'm going to get a 900NF or 1200NF when I have the $$$ for it.

But I think it is outside your price range. Hitatchi is probably a good choice.

but I'd try an RMA on your current monitor, I RMA'd a hard drive without registering it. I don't know if they actually care about that stuff when it comes to RMA...

I had to RMA a KDS monitor once and they never even asked for the receipt or anything. Just the serial number and then they sent a courier to pick it up ;)

I'm curious, does anyone own a 19" Hitachi? If so, how does it look? Are the colors vibrant? Does it appear sharp? Any help would be appreciated :)

Well short-length monitors aren't as good as quality in general.

The Samsung 955df is a great deal (think there is a Hot Deal thread right now) and very comparably to the Hitachi CM715.

If you can afford the 900nf, I'd get that. Otherwise, it'd probably be the 955df or CM715.

my kds 190i can be found for low $200s - it's a good budget monitor supporting 1280x768@85hz, and 1600x1280@75hz.

no problems yet - the geometry is indeed acceptable, OSD and menu is intuitive, image is good for this class of monitor...and i like the soft touch power button.

if u want a higher end monitor that's not pricey, the samsung 955DF is good, though it only supports 60hz at 1600x1280...however, most people find that to be too small on a 19" anyway, so....it's a flat shadow mask which doesn't carry the hefty pricetag of most aperatures.

When I sent my uncle's back they never asked for any recipet or anything. Just the serial number off the back of the Unit. I would suggest that you attempt to RMA it before spending money on another unless you really want a new one.
