I've got 1280x1024 running on a 17"
looks fine to me.

another thing you can do is to change the font size from the Appearance tab in Display Properties.

I can't understand why all these people have problems looking at high resolution screens. I run my 17" at 1152 x 864 and I'd run it at 1280 x 960 if the refresh rate was high enough. Heck I'm at 1024 x 768 on this 15" monitor and again I'd go to 1280 x 960 if the refresh rate was high enough.

In all cases it's as clear as day to see everything. And no, I haven't increased the sizes of anything like the fonts - it's all at default settings.

at work, I used 1600x1200 on a 19". What's the problem? It's all about the space.

At 19", I accept nothing smaller than 1600x1200 @85hz. Any lower resolution and I'm totally pissed (except for games) and any refresh rate and my eyes hurt. On a 17", I will do 12x10 and at 21", I will do 19x14. Space is quite essential for desktop users, if you are going to have that much desktop space, might as well use as much as you can.

when i set the 19s at 2048x1536 then it hurts my eyes, also, I have this old 13inch (12.0 viewable!) that can do 1280x1024 interlaced, that REALLY hurts my eyes.

Personally, I've stuck with 1152x864 for my 19" monitor on a GF2GTS. Now that I have a R8500 and the text is more clear, I may try 1280x1024, but before the text was too fuzzy at that res, regardless of the font size. You still have to have a good quality monitor and/or graphics card or the high resolutions will take their toll on your eyes. 11x8 is the recommended so I would stick with that if that's what looks best for you. Unless you enjoy having your face 5" from the screen. :p
