19" monitor flat CRT recommendations

Hello all,

I'm looking to get a second display (which will become my primary display) for my win2k box. I currently have a 17" Dell Trinitron p780 (the CRT one with the exceptionally flat screen) and I'd like to get a 19" monitor that is similar. I know that Dell used to have a 19" version of this monitor, but they don't seem to be listing it on their site anymore. So, I'm looking for recommendations of other monitors that are similar to the Dell I was considering; I want as flat a screen as possible for a CRT, but NOT an LCD monitor, and it has to be 19". I would prefer that the option not be refurbished just from a bad previous experience and, though I'm looking for inexpensive, I'd also like to get a good monitor for my money. (I'm willing to pay a little more for a good monitor, but I don't think I can afford LCD quite yet, being a mere college student 😉)

Thank you in advance!

I just received my NEC FP955 19" today. All I can say, is awesome! Has .24 dot pitch(not variable) and real good crisp text even in 1600x1200. I'm impressed. The only thing I noticed, is at the top of the screen, the center top looks like it is sagging down about 1mm. I'm not quite sure if I'll be able to straighten it out. I'm thinking it may be caused by the slight curvature of the screen on the corners. I just got this thing, so am going to try stuff tomorrow. Otherwise a nice screen so far for the $440 shipped I paid.

I've also been perusing some reviews at ZDnet and they recommended the Hitachi cm771. It has an 18" viewable screen, .22 dot pitch, and is apparently only 17.7 " deep (ZDnet says that's thinner than the other 19" CRTs they reviewed.) Anyone have any experience with this particular monitor? I'm going to start comparing these suggestions tonight after work, thanks a ton for your help!!

<< I think I'll get the LG Studioworks 995E. Here's some info:

It's only $199 on pricewatch.

He's looking for a flat screen and the 995E isn't one, but the LG 915 FT is a true flatscreen and with no irritating damper wires as well 🙂 Definately the next monitor on my shopping list, although the CTX PR960 and Viewsonic P95f also look great 🙂

Hey Desine, thanks for the link to the Hitachi monitor. Looks like a good one to me. and New egg has it for 345 +35 shipping Link

I am also looking for a good 19" but anything over $400 is just too much since i already have a decent 17". The Sony G400 looks to be 440 or more after shipping almost everywhere.

Anyone know if any of the big B&M's carry this Hitachi? I would love to be able to look at.

I have the NEC FP950 (must be older sibling to that one above), and it's absolutely fantastic. I'm a huge fan of NEC monitors. 🙂

I haven't had any experience with NewEgg. Are the dependable as far as customer service, shipping and all that? That's an incredibly good price! I know I'll have to pay a TON in shipping no matter where I go just cause of the size/weight of the thing 🙂

I'm also looking to try to stay under $400 if at all possible. I think I'm gonna go with the Hitachi based on the ZDnet reviews, but I'm still going to look around at all the other suggestions from everyone else here before I even think of whipping out that credit card! 🙂

Update: BTW, anyone who is interested in the ZDnet review I keep mentioning, here's the Link

I'm also looking for a nice 19 incher....the thing that bugs me about the trinitron tube based monitors are those two lines that go across it, once I notice something like that I'll always notice it 🙁. So recommedations on monitors that dont use the trinitron tube would be appreciated 😉

Buy.com is offering $30 off $300 and free shipping on anything! You may want to check it out. That's where I bought my monitor the other day, and get this...I recieved it the very next day! Ultra fast shipping for free!

I've had really good experiences with Buy.com in the past (bought from them at least 5 times). Where'd you see the info on the $30 off $300 and free shipping?

Update: Alright, I found the $30 off $300 (got it in an email from buy.com just after I asked the question here 😉), but where can I find the free shipping? I don't *need* free shipping, but it would definitely save me a lot of money! 🙂

Sony G400. Staples will pricematch. So if your local staples has it in stock, you can get some coupons and pricematch it down to a nice low price 🙂

Is buy.com offering free shipping for everything? It doesn't seem like they are. (Or is the free shipping you were talking about based on a coupon that you found?) Let me know, I'm ready to buy the monitor otherwise 🙂

What do you guys think of the Viewsonic P95f? I'm thinking about getting a 19 incher really soon, and this is the one I'm favoring right now. It's $441+shipping at mwave. Link
