Acer looks good, but after Anand's review of the HP, and its price, I might get it. Either way, I expect that you will be blown away by a monitor that size. 🙂 Good luck

The Acer with the 6ms is what has me thinking over the HP, especially for newer generation games where you might need the extra, hard to say for now.

THANKS

The Acer is fast for sure (visibly and significantly faster than 8+ ms S-PVA panels) but there are two issues that disqualify this monitor in my book: (1) lack of DVI input, (2) lack of height adjustment.

The only monitor that also sports the same 6 ms panel (which is slower than a 6 ms TN, though) is the Samsung 244t. Disadvantage: price.

I'm also afraid of encountering the infamous input lag on the large VA panel monitors. Otherwise, I'd get the 244t myself.

DarXoul - tell me more about this Samsung 204b - 8 bit? review?

Good thread fellas. I personally like the price/performance of the Dell 2005FPW when you can find them sub $400. it's considered a gaming LCD, it's wide screen it's only problem to my eyes it it does have motion blur with large trasitions e.g. light to darks. But 90% of the people say it's fast enough for them and they don't notice... Get it. Try it. If you don't like it you can sell for same or even a profit.

I can speak from recent changes that I just moved from a 19" Samsng 915N to the Dell 2005FPW. I love the wide aspect, and having played FarCry for most of the night @ 1680x1050 was not a problem. I noticed to tearing or ghosting at this point, and the overall appearance going from a 6-bit Tn display to a 8-bit super IPS was night and day.

Since I'm on the subject, the Dell appears to still have some minor edge light bleeding from the lower two corners, and on the Digital input it is really frickin bright...almost too much so. I was worried about the ability of my card to run this res without loosing too many FPS while keeping the eye candy filters at 4x8...so far so good. I don't think I will ever go back to a 5:4 or 4:5 ratio screen again.

Forgot one last thing...I used my student discount, call them as they will give you a better price then online, and mine was shipped in 3 days for $400.

It's (un)fortunately a TN panel - 20", 6 bit + dithering I assume (official website says 16.7M colors though), 5 ms on/off response time, according to Samsung's official specs, plus 800:1 contrast.

I've seen it in a store - it looks good (I've seen the "European", silver/black version), has tilt, swivel, height adjustment and pivot. Colors are crisp and the dithering really seems to work fine, blacks are pretty good, vertical viewing angle is of course crap but it's not really an issue for some users.

I've found a couple of user opinions so far, and two nice reviews:

(German)

and

(Danish)

In a nutshell - really good image quality for a TN panel, no ghosting, possibly not quite as fast as the speediest 19 inchers but nevertheless, a very good gaming panel. Backlight also seems to be OK, maybe not 100% perfect but for sure better than e.g. the ViewSonic VP2030b. Plus, all the adjustments you could possibly need, which is quite rare in the world of TN panels. Affordable, too.

BTW, there is a good article on impact of LCD electronics on color reproduction quality here:

http://www.behardware.com/articles/606-...ectronic-components-on-lcd-colors.html

Looks like dithering is quite advanced by now, and it takes an eagle eye to distinguish the 8/6 bit differences and subtleties in many situations.

Wow, that Acer looks nice...but dang... $1000.

I am going to be in the hunt for a new LCD myself very soon. Right now I am a bit too reluctant to go widescreen, but seems tougher to find a good 20'' non-widescreen than it is to find a good 19''.

But anyhow, GL with that Acer if you buy it. Let us know what you think, looks awesome, if your willing to deal with lack of widescreen support in games ( you CAN hack some of them to look good )

Thanks 🙂

On AT, I'm in fact just a lurker, I don't post much due to laziness / lack of spare time / insert any valid reason here 😉 I registered here in 2004 to get some feedback on my build. I wish I could dedicate more time to the boards in order to post advice myself. Monitors are actually the area where I still have most doubts and dilemmas so I try to see, read and hear as much about them as I can.

Zebo, which LCDs have you tried so far? Any TN sub 8 ms panels? If yes, I doubt the 204B can convince you in terms of gaming performance. All the reviews I've read were very positive but flatpanels.dk folks claim it's not quite as fast as the quickest 19" displays like Samsung 930BF or ViewSonic VX922/924.

When you get the 204B, please make sure to post a review. I'm waiting for G71 with my upgrade now but in March, I'll be buying a new monitor for sure.
