19" flatscreen monitor advice

Hello,

I recently moved to new home, and left my old 2 large desks behind; I own two 19" CRT's (Sony and NEC) , which are suddenly too big for my current fancier, but smaller office desk - so I'm looking for a replacement.

I'd like to buy 19" flat display, which would do 1600*1200 resolution and wouldn't cost a fortune; I'd use it with digital output equipped (I think at least) Ati R9500Pro. I'd like also a smaller 17", for use with my second PC equipped with PNY GF3Ti200 (also digital output available).

I want high quality, semi-pro screens . I didn't have or used flatscreen yet (only in my laptops), and so not sure which parameters are most important.. brightness, contrast ratio, dotpitch, resolution... ? How about refresh - since it's not CRT does it matter? I want to be able to play 3d games as well without any ghosting etc.

thx for advice

samsung 191T. but when you get up anything past 18 inches for an LCD, it starts to really rack up in price...exponentially. perhaps u may wanna take a look at the Dell flat panels. they usually have some really good deals if you're patient. i got my ultrasharp 1800FP for like 300ish.

As PinchyCM said, the Samsung 191T is a very popular high performance monitor - however, its a 1280x1024 native / max resolution, not a 1600 x 1200.

Unfortunatley almost all current commercial market 19-inch LCD monitors right now are 1280x1024. If your willing to go up a bit to a 20-inch model, you'll find lots of good 1600x1200 screens - but there seems to be a big price jump between 19 & 20 inchers at the moment as well.

If I were you I would get a bigger desk and stick with the 19" monitors. It would be cheaper, and imo, lcd's suck for gaming. However, if you really want the lcd, the samsung 191T would be a good choice.

thx for suggestion; I've been looking at samsung 192N at Office Depot (understand that "N" stands for analog product line?) and it looked pretty good, so "T" digital line is possibly better... how about the resolution? Can 191T do 1600*1200 ? Seems like 1280*1024 only maybe?

I need to do mainly general office work/web-browsing, digital photography editing and definitely 3d gaming; like the idea of built in power adapter; decreases clutter..

anyone else?

thx

to obispo21:

yeah, looks like a popular choice with great reviews; wonder whether the lower resolution would be too big problem or not; I noticed that there are hardly any 19" flatscreens available with higher resolutions... and the price for 20" + is just too much

to Atlantean:

well, I can't get the bigger desk - my current office is too small simply 🙁 ... I can slam my 19" on the desk, but then I'll be left with very little space, thats the problem.. I'll have a really close look at 191T I guess.

Btw, some time ago I've been reading somewhere a great reviews on SHARP displays (different technology with regard to pixel rendering), any ionfo on taht?

thx again

when you go with an LCD, make sure it has DVI. It makes all the difference in the world. My roomated had a 17inch LCD w/ analog, and I could really notice the decrease in clairty and sharpness. My eyes couldn't really take it for extended periods of time.

Oh, the 191T's native resolution is in fact only 1280x1024. If you really insist having 1600x1200, you'll probably need at least a 20 inch LCD. I suggest the 20 inch Dell LCD. That's the only decently priced one I can really find, the rest are WELL over a grand, even if you buy it from places like newegg. I can only imagine buying them retail, like from bestbuy.

Been searching a bit, and looks like 191T is really the only good choice; those screens capable of 1600*1200 are quite expensive; all of them.... I was planning to spend around $650-750, so I'd fit with Samsung.

Wonder whether to buy from Newegg (since local BestBuy wants $799 ), or maybe hang month or two with laptop and wait whether there will be some pricedrop on LCD market. Was lucky last time with CyberShot717; price dropped $200 within the week I was making my model decisions/selections 🙂

I've spent allot of time working with LCD's at school mostly Hitachi's and Viewsonics and think they are extremely crapy even compared to mid range CRTs. I also recently built a system with a Dell Ultrasharp 1800FP (191T??) using the DVI interface. Its big improvement over the crap I have to use at school but it still pales in comparison to my Sony G410.

So I would recommend buying it locally for return purposes if you?re not happy with the quality.

Rule of thumb is: NEVER buy anything from best buy that you can get at Newegg. 99.99999% of the time it will be cheaper. Newegg has it for 675...I'm not sure how much cheaper it'll get for a while. The last LCD price drop wasn't too long ago. I'd say expect one in the fall (someone correct me if i'm wrong). Oh, if you're looking at the 191T, check out the Dell Ultrasharp 1900, it's the same thing, just rebadged. Thought you'd like to know....

well, I have Sony G400 (and bought, tested and setup G410 for a friend as well); G410 is really a beauty... wonder if 191T would be downgrading; I've seen the analog version of Samsung (192N) at Officedepot on display, and I liked that somehow. Think I'll go to check out 191T at BestBuy (in stock), and if I like it, I'll decide whether to get it from newegg or buy there... btw, BestBuy has MIR $50 on 191T till 5/17/03 (today, heh), maybe will take advantage of it.....

thx
