19" + CRT

It's been ... oh ... 6 years since I bought a new monitor. My current one isn't going out just yet, but I'd like to get one that:

1. Has a flat tube.
2. Has a nice refresh rate for gaming.
3. Doesn't weigh as much as a Vespa.

In general (or if you'd like to get specific with model #'s, be my guest), what are your top three recommendations for manufacturers, and what are some to avoid at all costs?

I'd like to go higher than 19" if possible, but would even go for 2 phenominal 17" CRTs if the viewable screen space was such that placing the two monitors side-by-side didn't leave this huge gap of plastic. I'm frankly not a fan of LCD's just yet in terms of color fidelity. I had 2 sony TFT screens sitting side by side at my last job, same make and model between them but they never looked the same, even with exactly similar settings on the hardware. It'd be nice to get something for my home that had the same screen-space look as those two flat-panels, but provided the color depth and clarity of a CRT.

What's your budget?

It's kind of hard to find great 21"+ CRTs for new now.

Would you be ok buying a refurbished one?

Budget is flexible. If it costs more, I just wait a little longer and put the money aside to get it. Refurbished is fine as long as the quality and lifespan remains solid.

And like I said, I'd go for multiple 17" or 19" over a 21" if the image quality was great and it was more cost-effective.

Edited to add:

If you refer me to a specific retailer (thanks, Bona Fide!) ... While I'd prefer something that is available via B&M, if the S&H is about the same as sales tax, and the site doesn't charge sales tax, I'll go for it ;)

I would go for a Trinitron / Apreture Grille based CRT if you want the brightest / cleanest picture, Shadow Mask based CRT's (like the Samsung above) cant compete with them.
Unfortuately its not easy finding them new these days... but this site carries various refurbished apreture grille models:

http://www.azatek.com

Ive never ordered from them but they have a good rating on Reseller Ratings.

Personaly I went for the grand daddy of CRT's , the 24" Widescreen Sony FW900.. I've always told myself never to order a monitor on Ebay but I couldnt pass up the price, plus the seller has sold at least 5 other FW900's all with positive feedback. I should have mine by monday.

His current auction:

Thanks a bunch, JRW. There was a discussion in the Hot Deals forum today about Azatek. Seems few people here have bought through them, but they've still got a good RSR.

Does this look like a good option
Manufacturer: Compaq Part# 386472-001
Tube Type: CRT 21 inch
Dot Pitch: 0.26 mm (0.22 mm Horizontal) Dot Pitch
Viewable Size: 20.1 inch
HSCAN / VSCAN: 30 kHz to 107 kHz / 48 Hz to 160 Hz
Refresh Rate - Max/Recommended: 110Hz / 85Hz
Resolution - MAX/Recommended: 1920x1440 / 1600x1200 - 1280x1024
Type: MultiScan
Dimensions: 19.0 in. (W) x 18.7 in. (H) x 16.9 in (D)
Condition: Grade-A Excellent Condition. Reconditioned.
Warranty: 6Month Exchange
Special Notes: Used Inventory.
Or would something with a lower overall dot pitch be better? Is sub-$200 for a refurbished 21" monitor considered a good deal?

Oh... and I'm currently DROOLING over the Sony Trinitron GDM-FW900 on that site, but it's a bit out of my price range.

The Compaq you listed is Shadow mask ,This Compaq is Aperture grille and is based on the G520 wich is a great monitor.

Cant really compare shadow mask & aperture grille dot pitch ratings, .24 dot pitch on an aperture grille is great.

*smacks head* My bad. I need to pay more attention to the product details. Would you say that this 21" Sony FD Trinitron oem HP P1120 or D8915A Perfect Flat .24mm 1920x1440 Dual VGA is decent? I'm looking here at the sub $200 ones, but realize that with some of them it's a better deal to go for the monitors with free shipping ;)

There's also this 21" Sony Trinitron FD IBM P260 655223N for $199 with free shipping.

There are only two monitors (and their rebranded clones) I know of that do 137khz horizontal, which will give 2048x1536 at 85hz, the Mitsubishi 2070sb and the Sony F520. Both are almost impossible to find new these days, but there is actually a guy on ebay selling a factory sealed 2070 right now.

Also, make sure you get a monitor with one of the final generation AG tubes, with the dynamic/superbright mode. That really makes FPS games look a lot better.

Yea its a shame even the FW900 / F520 dont have the Dynamic mode like my G520P does. Its great for Gaming & Movies.

Just how many people play games in resolutions that high with a decent frame rate? Not people on a monitor budget for $200, that's for sure.

I bought an IBM P260 off of that Azatek site for $200. It's amazing.

It is extremely heavy though, about 70 pounds.
