Seems like every since they went away from being commission based they've gone down hill, it was good for some to have someone who was getting a cut of the sale, they'd be more willing to spend time to actually help someone.

I work at officemax, which isn't commissioned based, and i feel its better for the customers to have people that are helping them that aren't getting any cut directly from the sale. Commissioned employees are much more apt to corruption then non-commissioned. Logic: Customer A buys more then needed Employee A gets more money. Why would Employee A want Customer A to settle on a slighty cheaper product that will already do everything they want and then some?

This is why i must argue that it is a benefit to have people being paid by the company to help you, and not being paid by the consumers who they are selling everything to. It may seem they are "willing.. to help" because they make more money making you spend more.

Sorry to bring this up. Anyways Bump for people near these areas that may save some money!

ouzome,

that store has been there a long time, never go though, I've always felt they have a small selection and prices aren't very good.

The North Randall, Ohio is in a crappy location. there was a much nicer and newer one put up so i can understand why its closing.

ghetto fabulous location.

MIKE

wow the one near me is closing 🙁 I just bought a 8x external burner for $15 AR/PM

I always like CC over BB, better deals and PM policy

**confirmed**

I heard about this from some people who work there. No clues on how hot the deals will be though. I guess we will have to wait and see.

There was nothing special when the Westwood, CA store closed down. I wouldn't change any pre-made plans to run out to CC.

Circuit City has received all cash buyout offer from hedgefund to go private. Lot of changes could occur in the future if this buyout is approved by the BODs.

You've obviously never seen a Nebraska Furniture Mart (Warren Buffet's baby). Granted, there's only 2 stores right now, but it's killing a lot of the furniture AND electronic stores in my area (their electronics area puts any Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. to shame).

Check it out!!!

I am kinda confused

" Westland 9931 Mountview Drive Columbus, Ohio"

That address seems wrong, mapquest can't find it(no big surpise there)but I live right down from the Westland CC store and it is located broad street not mountview drive. Curiously enough though, I went to check the circuit city website for the closest stores. That address is not listed, but neither is the actual westland store, and its also not avaiable as a in stor epickup option, even though it was a couple days ago, since I tried for that 50.00 dollar 19" monitor. It looks true, but that address has to be wrong.

Personally grown up in the NFM HQ city and lived in KC, I can say that outside of some TV and maybe some stereo deals, NFM is nothing to brag about on electronic prices.

DO NOT go there if you want any computer components. I tried working with someone on some open stock, some 9500 video card about 16 months ago, and they would not even budge. Mind you, the price on this card was higher than the newer ATI 9600 in a box at BB/CC.

Now, for furniture and appliances, they are hard to beat. I would definitely shop around before buying electronics there. Outside of a deal on a 17" Viewsonic CRT monitor 7 years ago, I have purchased none of my electronic purchases from them, and it wasn't for trying.

And NFM is just a store Buffet purchased, definitely not his baby. Mrs. B and her sons built the store into what it is. Warren just expanded it's reach further.

In the news release, Circuit City (NYSE: CC - News) Announces 19 Superstore Closings as Part of Its Ongoing Initiatives to Improve Financial Performance, issued earlier today by Circuit City Stores, Inc. over PR Newswire, we are advised by the company that the address of the Westland store in Columbus, Ohio, should read "4030 West Broad St." rather than "9931 Mountview Drive" as originally issued inadvertently.

I go to CC whenever I can over Best Buy (they're 10 seconds apart by me). Usually the prices are the same and at CC I don't have to stand in a line to buy something or ask someone a question. What really gets me is when I see a group of 5 Best Buy employees all chatting together and asking a question makes you feel like you're butting in.

No, I don't work at CC, it's just my experience with both chains.

The problem was that some sales people were making more than managers...even the store managers.

There is in Wichita, KS.
Who knows.

CC won't be merging with CompUSA

I love those showcase stores, CompUSA, CC, Best Buy. I have the option to go look at the hardware and then go home, get online and get a better deal almost always with no tax and free shipping alot of times. The markup in those retail stores is disgusting. For example, you'd have to be a complete moron to buy a USB cable from any of those places. The markup is 10 to 20 times. I remember visiting the CompUSA store in Las Vegas mid 90's and it was always packed with people. Now when I go, it looks pretty run down with alot less customers, the CS is abysmal. I wouldn't be suprised at all to see that one go under.....

That was your experience, no guarantee the same situation will play out this friday. This would be the place to go if you are interested in seeing what they have, and maybe getting a deal, maybe not. Thanks for the heads up OP.

That would be a valid argument if this thread didn't exist and the same situation didn't play out 2 times for me. I went to 2 different closing stores and walked away with nothing. I will repeat it once again. If you know nothing about getting a deal definitely go check it out. You will save yourself tons of money.

Ditto. Same deal for me. Unfortunately VaG is correct that there is rarely any deals. I went to some Minnesota closings and didn't find crap.

Amen and good riddance to the worst offender.
1. Refusal to honor product replacement plan terms.
2. Changing rebate terms after the fact.
3. Changing prices on a special orders between order and delivery, refusing to give you your item unless you pay the new, higher price.
They've jacked with me too many times to deserve anything better than disdain. (but I'll freely give some gloating over their stores closing)
Wow, for a second there, I thought that you were talking about Tiger Direct. 😛

BestBuy is worse - they seem to be on an "anti-commision" plan. Meaning, that if you don't sell enough, you get some sort of penalty assessed. Yet, you don't get a paid performance bonus (at least not directly) for sales, as I understand it. So BB doesn't have to pay commissions to their sales people, yet their sales people still treat and upsell customers in a similar manner to if they were on commission. End result? Both customers, and sales employees get screwed. Who wins? BestBuy Corporation, well, as long as anyone continues to shop there. (I am guilty of that, I usually only go for their loss-leader-esque media sales, and I sort of equally do that with all of my local major retailers, except that BB is closest and seems to have those sorts of sales more often, so I still shop there. I really shouldn't though.)

Having "worked retail" myself (for a vendor doing computer shows), I have to admit that I would much prefer non-comissioned work. It allows me to try to fit the customer with what products would be most appropriate for them, and still have a (relatively) clear concience at the end of the day. I know it's not really probably the appropriate profession for them, but generally-speaking, tech geeks make the best (in terms of honesty and customer-service) salespeople. (They might not produce the highest level of "upsell" though, which is why places like BB seemingly higher attractive younger sales people, often with far less experience working for outfits like that. They tend not to complain or revolt against the policies as much that way.)

Oh, and my local OM store gives me the best customer-service out of all of them, so props for that, even though I don't really buy that much there overall.
