18x DVD-/+RW

Don't have a link because its not on Plextors site yet, but they are soon-to-release an 18x DVD-/+RW! 18x on single layer -/+R media, and 10x to +R double layer media and 6x to -R double layer. Anybody interested?

oh, i didnt mean in going out and buying plextors right when it comes out, i meant interested in the speed bump. hasnt it long been believed the 16x was the limit for dvd-\+rw?

but i do agree, real world performance will most likely be minimal

I thought anything faster than 16X for DVDs wasn't possible because of the drive speed. 16X DVD speed is the equivalent of 52X CD right?

why burn everything at 8X? todays media can support the 16X burns with high quality results. i have seen some scans where the quality goes down if you burn at slower speed. makes no sense

8x dvds = $.20-.4
16x = ~$1 i believe
18x = who knows but probable $3

what this means: 18x is a waste of money. not only is the performance increase VERY minimal, especially compared to the 8x-16x gap, but you probably have to buy a new dvd burner. i'm not spending $50 + the cost of dvds to burn a movie 30 seconds faster

no, you can buy 16X media on sale usualy below $20 a spindle of 50, so your figures are off. and lately their have been some sales on verbatim which is pretty good media

It will burn much more data onto the disc than what the transfer rates for a CD would be. In fact, if CD's burned data equivalent to a DVD as far as optical technology goes, then your 700mb CD would be done in less than a minute.

8x DVD write transers a lot of information at once. 16x is double that, but does not burn 2 times faster.

Because if you think about it, a 48x will do 4-5 megabytes per second. Both an DVD-RW 8x and CD-RW 8x will take generally 5-15 minutes when burning data or audio. Both take "almost" the same time. What we're looking at, is more data being put onto a 5 gig disc in comparison to a 700mb disc. So if you get what I mean, DVD technology is far more superior to CD technology (which started becoming popular in the 90's).

52x CD and 16X DVD are both roughly 10,000RPM which is the limitation he's referring to.

8X CDRW doesn't take 15 minutes to burn, sorry but I know this is false because of the fact that I have a 12X CDRW drive (burns 8X CDRWs) and when I burnt CDRs at their capacity at 12X, it took about 20 minutes. Sorry but the DVD and CDRW speeds don't scale linearly...

plextor reports that the drive will be able to burn at 18x to many 16x medias. agreed, though. im not gonna spend money on a new drive to shave a few sec off a burn.
