That's about right. The economy being what it is, repair shops are making a killing.

I know transmissions are a lot but shouldn't $1850 buy you a new one including labor with beer money left over?

EDIT: It's an auto.

I think so too. I had some tranny shop work on my 1986 Honda Accord LX about 7 years ago and the bill came to $1350. Not a new transmission, just a rework. Foreign cars aren't cheap to work on.

The following is a typical list price on remanufactured trans for 626 series (late model).

626 2.0L 1994-2000
LA4A-EL (CD4E) $2179.00

626 2.5L 1995-2000
GF4AEL $2164.00

This is of course not the price that the shop pays for it, but it is the price that YOU would be charged for it by a shop, not including labor. A "new" transmission would run anywhere from 25-50% more than a reman, if you could even get a new one from the factory.

The labor man-hours cited by Chilton's (IIRC) to overhaul my transmission was 18 hours @ $40.00+ per hour.

I asked him what they did for that amount of money and his reply was that he did not know nor did he ask.
He could check the work order & invoice to find out what they did for that kind of money. At $1800.0 is very reasonable for transmission work. The previous owner of my Ford Taurus paid $2280.00 USD for a new transmission & work on it, while my coworker paid $2660.00 USD for a new transmission & work on his Campry.

I don't know how much a rebuilt transmission should be, but I figure that it wouldn't be cheap because transmission have the most parts in a car.

A dedicated trans.only shop usually has access to remanufactured (referbs) of popular x-missions and just swaps em out. Depending on popularity and market pricing 1850.00 may be the going rip. But for that kind of money I would expect perfection and a long warranty.
