1800Flowers.com passed my credit card to another company!

Here's the deal:

I placed an order from 1800flowers.com at the end of July for flowers to be sent to a wake to which I could not attend.

The flowers arrived on time and I was certainly happy with their service.

Fast forward to Nov 1.....I receive a strange $48 charge on my credit card from a company I had never
heard of - Travelvalues. I called up my Credit Card company and was given Travelvalues telephone number to investigate.

I called them up and they informed me that I had been signed up for a free 90 day trial to their service
when I placed my order with 1800flowers. As I had not cancelled my membership during that time, I had been charged the annual fee.

I certainly did not intentionally sign up for this service. When I placed my order, I do remember
lot of annoying pop-ups which I had to close, but I did NOT sign up. I assume one of them was something like I had to uncheck something if I did not want this free trial.

A free trial is one thing, charging me is completely another. Not once during this 90 day free trial did I receive anything from this company confirming my membership.

Luckily, I pay attention to my monthly statements and noticed it, but how many people do not?

I called up travelvalues and they are refunding my $48.

I emailed 1800flowers and told them what I think of them.....not that that will do much good.

BE CAREFUL!

That isn't cool at all, glad I've never used them.

I almost did when there was a special in hot deals...

And yes, one time credit card numbers with a specified limit are very nice.

That's pretty bad. I know that AT subscription is the same way - you have to UNCHECK the "give $1 donation" box.

I thought they had bitched at ibill to get rid of that, but when I renewed it was there.

Needless to say I unchecked it, but if I hadn't been looking for it I likely wouldn't have seen it.

Not that I agree with what they did/are doing but...

This proves the old adage, "always read the fine print."

I read EVERYTHING on order pages. Even popups.

I would definitely use 1 time payments if I was in any doubt about the company's reputation.

But I figured 1800flowers.com were pretty reliable.....think again.

Yep, I almost clicked submit until I saw that $1 donation box which I promptly unchecked since it wasn't benefiting the Ferengi Foundation :D

I agree, its partly my fault.....I was in a rush to leave for work and needed to get the order placed so the flowers would arrive in time.....I should have read everything more carefully. But still, I am shocked that a company as established as them would do that.
