1800 mAH rechargeable batteries + HP 315 digicam?

RossMAN

Grand Nagus
UPDATE: I've spent hours scouring Thomas-Distributing, NewEgg and Sunnbattery today looking for the best 8 AA rechargeable batteries and rapid charger. I'm close to making my first eBay purchase ever, thinking about buying this but I've heard very little about 1800 mAH rechargeable batteries. Should I get 1600 mAH or 1800 mAH for use with an HP 315 digicam?

I helped my sister buy the HP PhotoSmart 315 digital camera last week plus 128MB type I CF.

She needs a CF reader and some rechargeable batteries, do you think these are the best choices?
1) POWEREX MH-C204F 3-HOUR SMART CHARGER & BATTERY KIT for $35
2) ImageMate CompactFlash USB by SanDisk for $19.

Hey RossMAN, I followed the link in your sig and here I am 🙂

I received a CF reader recently as a gift. See if your sister is interested in this one, the "ZiO!". Mine came with a 3 ft. USB extension cable, although the one I linked doesn't say it comes with one so if you get it, make sure it does. I like it and have had no probs with it. As for the AA battery charger, it's nice if it comes packaged with the CF reader, but I don't see why any generic one wouldn't do.

Must be nice to have a ferengi as a brother 😀

For fun, here's a disturbing link from the Dell site :Q😛

I'm not sure if this applies to that particular model, but I have read that some (if not all) HP digital cameras can NOT use rechargeable batteries. I highly recommend you look into it before buying them and possibly damaging the camera.

Thanks for the reply, that looks really cool sorta like the "USB thumb drives". Wish I had known about that sooner because my sister bought her HP 315 from Dell.com (before the Staples $100 after rebate deal).

Yeah it is nice having me as a brother anytime she wants something she calls me and says "Ross I need this" and I go out and find the best product at the best possible price. Then again she does get me into all movies for free which is kinda nice.

Thanks, I had heard that and it was one of my concerns however several people I've read have used rechargeables just fine with this particular HP digicam.

Any other comments about the two items from Newegg.com?

I've got the Maha charger and have no complaints. Does what it's supposed to do and it's compact enough to stuff in my camera bag. Good product.

I bought it from Thomas Distributing before newegg started selling them. Looks like the price is about the same.

I like the ADS Tech readers the best. Using their smartmedia 1394, and according to their reps (i'm a member of the press so I have spoken with their PR department), all their readers should be supported natively by Microsoft OS', including 98, Me, NT and XP. No drivers needed to download, you can get a firewire version, although thats all they offer, no USB. I like it better than the Simple Technology and the Zio that I had. It isn't as cheap as that one, but I like firewire better, thats why I chose it, its model API704.

Just my 2 cents...

I have a Maha charger and powerex batteries and they have worked well in my Olympus 3000Z digital camera. I'd buy another set of batteries though, one to keep in your camera, and one to keep freshly charged. Also, it's also good to have a set of lithium ion batteries on hand as backups, they have a shelf life of at least 5 years, so they make great backup batteries in case you dont have a fresh set. NiMH batteries dont have a long shelf life, probably about 2 weeks or so I'd imagine. Thomas Distributing is a great site with a good selection, I've ordered from them multiple times with no hassles.

I bought some 1800mAH Gold Peak (GP) batteries from that seller. I am extremely pleased with them. I have some 1600mAH Nexcell's that I'm not too happy with. They don't seem to last too long and one of them has some stuff forming (leaking?) under the wrapper.

The Gold Peak's are excellent. They lasted a LOT longer than I expected. You may want to look into them. I don't know anything about that charger. I use the Radio Shack smart charger/conditioner and I really like it.

Here's a link to the Gold Peak's if you're interested.

The ones I use in that exact camera are Energizer ACCU's NiMH with a 1200mah rating. I have been using them for a while ( about a year or so, or as long as I have had the camera) With no ill effects.

<edit>
Oh, and I bought them at Home Depot 🙂 Charger was $19 not sure about the batteries, been too long 🙂

Thanks, I didn't hear about GP until read several praising posts in a digital camera UseNet NewsGroup. I hope your leaking Nexcell is an isolated incident because I bought 8 AA Nexcell 1600 mAH's with MAHA charger/car adapter for $35.95 from Sunnbattery via eBay. Any sort of leaking would really suck.

Do 1600 vs. 1800 rated make a big difference? Does any1 use the GP Powerbank 2 kit from Thomas Distributing? It only costs $14! but 16hr charge!.....

I know that Viperoni owns some GP 1800 mAH's but I think he has the 3 hour MAHA charger.

I've heard the difference between 1600 and 1800 is negligible, but I haven't seen any hard evidence of that yet. If 1800's were to give me 30+ minutes of time over 1600's then I could easily justify the cost difference.

UPDATE: Finally bought the 8 Powerex 1600 mAH AA's with MHC204F 3 hr quick charger and car adapter for $43.45 shipped from Sunnbattery.com's eBay auction. They worked just fine in her HP 315 digicam. My sister liked them so much that I sold them to her and bought myself a Panasonic 5 hr charger with 6 1600 mAH AA's & 2 AAA's for only $20 after $5 rebate at my local CostCo B&M.

<< You'd get roughly 13% more battery life when used by the same devices. Theoretically, of course. >>

That's pretty significant.

Ross, I took another 30 some odd pics today (check sig for a new project 😀), on the first set of batteries I charged + used for the first time last saturday (10days ago).
That's up to around 80pics.
I'm very happy with that 😀
