Okay, so it probably isn't going to win Drill of the Year, but if dear old dad isn't a master carpenter and uses a drill twice a year, maybe this will do:

Home Depot has advertised today an 18-volt Workforce brand cordless drill for $9.97. SKU 441589 Price good 12/15-12/24. It shows online but I don't know how to make a link to there without the session ID. Maybe someone else can link it for me.

I ordered online. Their site is really buggy, though. Several times, it added additional items into the shopping cart. It also filled in name/addresses for people in Utah and New Jersey. I am the only user on this PC, so either it is meant to fill out example addresses or one of the previous links includes that info.

(Edit) Looks to be sold out online now.

I can't really tell from the picture. Does anyone know if this has torque adjustment? If not, I would definately stay away from this thing unless you like going through walls. 🙂 If it does though, this is nice. 18-Volt is more than enough for household needs.

Remember, u get what u pay for. HD had a black friday deal with a Ryobi set that I unfortunately missed out on. That woulda been nice.

I got a cheap (~30$) cordless drill from work and it sucked. Had adjustable torque - but that didn't matter cuz it had no power to drive anything in! It also couldn't hold on to bits - and the one of the bits even broke the first time using it. haha. I learned my lesson about cheap drills.

I went to HD at 5:30am on Black Friday and got the Ryobi 18V drill and flash light set, a set of bits, and the Rigid shop vac. It was my first attempt at Black Friday, and I came away pretty happy.

The Ryobi replaced a $10 drill and bit set that I used through five years of college and grad school. Mine had trouble drilling through my girlfriend's steel computer case when it was only half a year old and on full charge. It wasn't 18V, though.

Good luck!

at first i thought it was Li.
oh wells. I'll keep my $30 coscto one.

FWIW--I do try to shop Lowes when possible, as my meager protest against a member of HD's board of directors, Dick Brown (yes, he chooses to go by that name). He got my employer into an unprofitable, high-profile contract with a gov't customer, jacked his own salary up, then flew the coop with a cushy $56 million golden parachute while we struggled to deliver the contract.

When asked in a stockholders' meeting why he deserved such an exorbitant salary as CEO, he smugly answered "I have an expensive wife." :|
