18 things we have learned from the Schiavo Case

EDIT: Not that I disagree with any point, but I also feel very badly for her family. I don't see the harm in keeping her alive, and to some extent feel that the parents should have more of a say, but I can't say I agree with the legistlation or the political posturing that the Right has exhibited. I wish they had this much zeal when it came to issues such as Stem Cell research or health care for the poor, issues that result in deaths to people that can lead normal lives if treated properly.

ALSO, this was not written by me, this was on a yahoo message board, and I can no longer find a working link to it.

1) Jeb Bush, George W. Bush, and Tom Delay are all world renowned neurologists.

2) 22 successive court battles that all ended in exactly the same way means there is something wrong with the courts, not the Schindler's case.

3) Mike is after money which is why he turned down 1 million dollars and 10 million dollars to sign over guardianship.

4) Congress and the State Legislature of Florida has nothing better to do than pry into the private medical affairs of others.

5) Pulling life support is bad in Florida when authorized by the legal next-of-kin, but pulling life support is good in Texas when you run out of money and the mother pleads not to pull the plug on her baby.

6) Medical diagnoses are best performed by watching highly editted videotape made by Randall Terry rather than in person by trained physicians.

7) Minimum wage making nursing assistants are more qualified to diagnose a persistant vegetative state than experienced neurologists.

8) Cerebral spinal fluid is a magical potion that can mimic the entire functions of a missing cerebral cortex.

9) 15 years in the same persistant state is not really enough time to make an accurate diagnosis.

10) A feeding tube that infuses yellow nutritional goop is not really "life support".

11) Jesus was wrong when he said that a man and woman should leave their parents and cleave only to each other.

12) Marriage is the most sacred of all unions, except when it isn't.

13) Interfering in a family's private tragedy is a great reason to cut short a vacation, but getting a memo that warns a known terrorist is determine to strike inside the US is cause to relax and finish up some R&R.

14) Pro-lifers are really compassionate people which is why they are hoping that Michael Schiavo dies a horrible painful death.

15) The Supreme Court of the United States and the State Supreme Court of Florida mean "Maybe" when they are saying "No!".

16) Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is a bleeding heart liberal.

17) 7 Supreme Court Justices were appointed by republican presidents, so it's Clinton's fault.

18) A judge who makes rulings based on the law is obviously an atheist, liberal, democratic activist even though he is a conservative, republican, Southern Baptist.

Great stuff. Your own observations or was that on the net somewhere?

In any event, spot on stuff.

They aren't the ones who started this.. are they? They wanted her to stay alive... and then he claims 8 years later to remember that she didn't want to stay alive like that.. 8 years later ???

The movies will be great!

The one from the parents will have Terry horse-back riding and frolicking in the sun during the day and at night, when she's back at the assisted living home, Michael will sneak in and beat her with a 4 iron and then go out and rent crack-snorting hookers with the settlement money he stole from Terry. :D

Oh god, I'm so tired of this story. If each story represented a person I shoot, let's just say that a lot of people won't be alive.

This is almost as objective as the GWB resume. Congrats on pulling up the DU/Moveon talking points!

well technically he is the legal guardian, had he wanted to pull the tube 1 day after she became pvs its well within his rights, so any challenge to that is "starting something"

Yes, they are the ones that disagreed with the course of treatment after the malpractice settlement; and they are the
ones who keep trumping up evidence that the court has to keep dismissing as irrelevant to the initial judgement.

They wanted her to stay alive...

Even against her own wishes, or at least what the court was able to determine would be her wishes (not her husbands),
based on witness testimony from both sides of the issue?

and then he claims 8 years later to remember that she didn't want to stay alive like that.. 8 years later ???

Wrong, he tried for several years to provide treatments and therapy that failed to provide her with any chance of
recovery. He made what the best doctors he could find thought was the best effort available, and when that did
not work, he asked the courts to help decide if she would have chosen to continue as a PVS patient.

Yes, we were. :( One of the many reasons I refuse to support the Bush presidency regardless of my political affiliation.

Did you mean the part about the memo where there was no useful information?

Yes, terrorists want to attaack the US. If has ever been news to anyone, please pull your head out of the sand.

Stop trying to take the moral high ground and admit that the Republican Party is full of cr@p on many issues. Namely, the refusal to fund Stem Cell Research, which if you do any research involves frozen embroyos that have been donated by fertility clinics that reside in petri dishes. I feel bad for Terri and her family, this is a no win situation for everyone. But for once the majority of people in this country aren't falling for it. They see this effort for the hypocracy that is- Many Republicans prefer to protect petri dishes to prove a point rather than making the scientific effort to research medical advances that could save thousands of people.

Just as stupid as the idea that terrorism is a larger threat now than before 9/11.

What are the terrorists doing differently? Trying to kill us deader? Please.

It's the "big new threat" because the politicians can use it to scare up votes and the media can sell ad time talking about it. This whole NATION needs to pull its head out of the sand. The businessmen and politicos are playing you all, and most of you lap it up. Not just one party either - both those scumsucking Repubs and ratbastard Dems are guilty. My discontent is not partisan.

It's even sadder that people think airports are safer. The security isn't any different now kids, there's just more of it. It's the same security that got beaten the first time, only now it's much more visible that they're harassing little old ladies that are obvious threats to national security.

Actually, there is one big change. They're confiscating tweezers now. Have you ever had someone attack you with tweezers or nail clippers? If some poor sod came after me with fingernail care products, I would beat him to death with my seat cushion/flotation device on principle, and then slam his head in my tray table whilst returning it to it's upright position.

"Did you pack your bags yourself?"

It just depends on what you think they're falling for. I don't think either side is allowing honest debate on the issue. I think Michael Shiavo is a despicable human being. I also think the parents refuse to let go.

Since you're so in tune with the case, can you answer two questions people refuse to answer on this board?

1) Are MRIs and PETs the definitive tests for detecting PVS?

2) Has Terri Shiavo received either test?

I've heard that they are and she hasn't, but nobody seemed to know in the other threads. My problem is not with the action of pulling her tube, but that I think her "husband" is denying any sort of examination which will really detect her state.

Personally, I think she's a carrot, but I think he should have the tests done to remove any doubt.

Earlier, Pinellas Circuit Judge George Greer rejected the family?s latest motion. The family claimed Schiavo tried to say ?I want to live? hours before her tube was removed, saying ?AHHHHH? and ?WAAAAAAA? when asked to repeat the phrase.

AHHHHH WAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSUP!!!!!!!!!!
