I'm trying to make a simple poker table that i can put on top of another table....more or less plywood + foam + cloth. would 18" be enough per person, assuming a hexagonal or octagonal shape? it's not going to be terribly large

update:
well i've gone and cut the board. each player now will have 25" of shoulder room AT the table, as someone said, if they lean back they'll have more space due to the angles i've used. the chip tray, fabric and foam will all arrive tomorrow. i'll post pictures of the progress

sorta like this(paint representation)http://www.exitonly.net/lithium/ATOT/table.gif
overall size is 42" tall and 72" long

that's true, that's only their table space, shoulder space would be a bit larger.....even with a 36" square table, could i fit 6 people in on that? that would put two people next to eachother...

I would say look around online for some dimensions or go to a store and find one and do some measuring.

18" is enough for standing shoulder-to-shoulder. moving your arms around and maintaining secrecy when playing poker requires perhaps 30".

Probably, but for a home game you could get away with less. 24" should be ok. I think 18" would be uncomfortable.
