got a new case and it mounts the harddrives a different way and now my 18" is just not long enough. 18" is the stated maximum for an IDE cable, but in real world will running 24" cause any problems?

I've used 24" and even 36" cables even in RAID and never had any problems...It may be the quality not quantity in inches though

I try to keep them within specifications, but I don't think there's much harm in non-critical installations using 24" or even 36" cables as long as they're decently constructed.

I have also used 24" and 36" without any problem. That is the biggest problem with IDE in my opinion is the cables. I have a few SATA drives and can put them anywhere in the case and not have to worry about 2 drives on the same channel being near each other. IDE cables are a real pain for me.
