no just the windows/system32/drivers directory. Hmm my guess tho is it would look there auto.

Do you have a mass storage device listed in usb in device manager? This should be your reader. In my case with this hosed even an external reader would not be recognized either.

Earlier when I said I'm at the edge of my experience I meant I'm at a point where I'm into the I don't know realm - I thought I'd forwarn you I'm not a guru...Just trying to help you through a problem that is strangely similar to what I went through.

I think your problem is windows is not recognizing the reader - hence unknown device. I believe if it was recognized it would show as usb mass storage device, I think the proper driver is usbstor. I'm not sure if you need to uninstall the device first or if the driver is corrupt. I did not need an inf file for my foxconn reader since I believe the mass storage driver is windows generic. Really, this is about all I know, I struggled for days until I copied these files, uninstalled the device and reinstalled it.

*starts banging head on wall*

you could pop the side of the other computer and connect the reader directly to a usb header to verify it works in another computer. this is what got me started on a quest to figure out why the foxconn worked on two other computers and not on the one I needed it to work on.
edit: Try this, uninstall device. Go to add new hardware ( trying to remember procedure before bed) should see usb mass storage- try adding and direct to the driver directory. may need to try a permutation or two auto or whatever. This may work as opposed to just trying to update a driver.

man that last bit of advice sounded so good.... until i went to add hardware lmao all it does it scan for hardware changes.. it tells me there is an "unknown device" and all i can do is ancel or click ok which just auto installs it again, not seeing a way for me to go add hardware like in win2000 etc

my sis isn't home i MIGHT be able ot go try it out on her comp

Ok, I just went through similar problems with a Foxconn reader. This worked for me, I had the problem with windows not having or installing the proper drivers.

Most of the usb drivers in my windows/system32 drivers folder were gone. I copied them from another xp computer into the non working reader computers's folder. This computer was reading the "usb mass storage" device as a DMHS1B Rev 5 DFU adapter whatever the hell that is, so I uninstalled it, updated the driver to usb mass storage and all is well.

edit: when in device manager don't look at drives, look at usb devices and isolate your device by booting unplugged and then booting plugged in. If the usb drivers are hosed, it may not display properly in drives.

I had an odd problem when I connected a pair of USB hard-drives to a couple of USB ports hard wired on my motherboard. They ran only in USB 1.1... I thought 18 hours was a little long for a 160 gig hard drive backup. Turns out it said "400mb/min" or something and I just read it as "400mb/sec" out of habit. Whoops.

Anyhow, I fixed this by going into the device manager, removing the old USB drivers, and then using the wizard to install new ones. After that, the drives worked like a charm. (1800mb/min is much faster)

WOOHOO ok Melectricus you did it!
I took the card reader to my sisters computer which also runs winXP pro SP2, but an abit an7-s mobo, 2600xp mobile, etc. i plugged it right to a USB header while the system was running and BAM pops up saying new device detected, mass storage device, blah blah blah and everything works gorgeously!
I went to windows/system32/drivers/ and copied every file that started with USB including USBSTOR.SYS and emailed it to me. came back to my computer plugged the bastard in, copied and pasted those files into the same directory on my computer (yes i had to replace all, none were missing) rebooted and checked device manager, it sees it as a mass storage device and it can read!
WOOHOO thanks for the help everyone especially you Melectricus!!!!!!!! i dunno what was exactky wrong so unforunately i didn't learn too much but hey it was an experience!

Hi, I have the exact same issues that Billy seemed to have, the only problem is I don't have access to another computer. Could someone send me the appropriate USB drivers so I can attempt to fix my issue. Thanks.
