It doesn't say what brand it is, but it says IBM Glass? WTF do you think they mean by that?

they probably threw in "IBM" to catch people's attention. Come on, what's the difference between an IBM glass and a generic glass? As long as you can see right thru it, it don't make any differnce.

they probably mean the LCD was made by IBM, which would the major component to consider for it's quality anyway. probably less bad pixels than say, Viewsonic. but the finished unit must be put together by a generic manufacturer

It's made by Acer. I bought this monitor for work. It is really excellent for text/2d work. It is not appropriate for movies or games. The pixel recharge rate is 50 ms causing motion blur. I didn't have any bad pixels. Has a built in USB hub and little speakers. I may pick one up for my wife for her home PC. I will stick with my Trinitron for gaming.

ahhh! Sooo tempting.. Makes me wonder when LCDs will start getting cheaper, seen lots of 18.1"s for $999 lately. I'd hate to buy it and find out it drops in price a month later.. Hmmm.. Maybe, early Birthday present to myself.. :D Anybody have comments about this particular model or anything?

edit: Is this a refurb? Someone said it was an Acer, which model is it? Why is the viewsonic listed for about 1560$ AND it's a refurb??

I've done extensive research on LCD panels. Here's some information about this panel (the Acer FP855) that might help you make a decision. Before the links, I'd just like to say that despite the attractive price, I've eliminated it from my consideration due to poor reviews. Most analysts say that LCD panel prices will reach the lowest point near the end of this summer, so waiting might be a good idea. Also, new technologies like MVA (multi-domain vertical alignment) screens with enhanced color, fast response time and a true 160 degree viewing angle are just being released. This new type of panel is currently made by Fujitsu and integrated into the ViewSonic VG175, VA800, and Sceptre 17.4" models. Personally, I'm waiting for more developments in this area. That said, here's more information on this LCD:

Acer's product information page
Cnet Review
Cnet performance chart
PC Magazine (UK) Review
Review from XbitLabs

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Thanks for the info! I'll keep waiting.. Don't like to see my purchases drop a lot in price after several months, ie. my plextor 12/10/32a :disgust: 220$ -> 140$?

Not exactly a good deal. This LCD is pretty much subpar. I'd recommend spending the money on a quality CRT monitor if you really need a display now. Other than that, I'd skip it. ;)

Looks like they restocked 300 more of them. I actually want/need a LCD since my desk is too small for a bigger monitor. I have 15" monitor now.

I will reiterate. It is a good monitor for text! For business use it is great. Saves huge amount of space on desks of limited size and provides a lot of screen real estate. If you are a gamer than I would most definitely pass. As in anything newer, better and cheaper components are always around the corner but for my humble office purposes is is a good deal.

You guys are reminding me of my 17" Sony SF2 that I bought back in 1995 for $999. I must say that LCDs drop in price much faster than CRTs use to...
