Battle rifle is actually pretty common, as is Assault rifle. Thing is people use the terms incorrectly and make themselves look dumb.

Battle Rifle= Semi/Full auto rifle shooting a full powered round (7.62x51/.308 etc)
IIRC, the old bolt-actions ('03 Springfield; K98 Mauser; Lee-Enfield; Mosin-Nagant; etc.) are also classified as "battle rifles."

I love that this is yet another article that is completely amazed that "OMG he wasn't a loner who was bullied and picked on and a complete outcast".

Can the media knock that off? These mass murders are pyschopaths. Not high school rejects. How is this still perpetuated?

WTF? What drives a pretty ordinary kid to go batshit crazy? I would love to know why he wanted to carry out his plan. Why did he want to kill his parents? Why did he want to shoot up his school? Its a pity that we dont know anything about his motives yet.
Some people make it their daily mission to make other people as miserable as they can, using every available minute they can find. Daily torment without any idea of how to escape it, feeling indefinitely trapped, can really screw with your mind.
Some take it out on themselves, and make their escape with simple suicide. Others find more violent ways of dealing with the problem. And others just endure it in the faint hope that some day things might somehow improve, though there are likely to be mental injuries that will never fully heal.

I'm glad he was stopped in time - the kid needs serious psychiatric help. Its amazing nobody picked up on it thus far - he must be pretty disturbed and I would think that would be visible to those close to him.
Some people are inherently difficult to read. It gets even more difficult when they themselves know about this, and actively add to the obfuscation.

Why didnt God look after all those other people that have been killed in school shootings?
God works in mysteriously dickish ways.

From the article:
Lee said there hadn’t been any reports in junior or senior high school that LaDue had been bullied. Root said the same.

“He had plenty of friends,” she said. “It was like the outcast friends kind of thing, but he had plenty of friends. I don’t think they got bullied at all, not that I saw.”
In my experience, teachers are not terribly observant of these things.
And they simply are not omnipresent, so there are lapses in what they can see. Many lapses.

Been there. Done that. And hated every day of it, in near silence.

But I also knew that violence was not an option. It never was, and it never will be. It's not my way.
