175 GB of unaccounted storage space

My hard drive has a capacity of 465 GB. I've run WinDirStat and it says that there are only 228 GB worth of files on my hard drive. Windows, however, states that I only have 62 GB free. This leaves about 175 GB unaccounted for.

I tried defragmenting my disk, but it didn't help. I also ran disk clean up and deleted all the restore points/shadow storage, but that also didn't make a difference. I ran the command line "vssadmin list shadowstorage" to double check, and it says that shadow storage is only taking up about 3 GB.

Here are some pics of storage management in "my computer", WinDirStat results, and a window showing disk usage for restore points.

I'm at a lost as to where the space is being taken up. Any help will be appreciated.

EDIT: WinDirStat is showing 172 GB of unknown space. What can this be? I'm running a full disk check now, as another thread with a similar problem found this to be the solution.

EDIT 2: The disk check did nothing...

*edit* Do you have show hidden files & folders enabled?

I've seen this happen with restore points but that's a huge amount given the size of the drive. Check how much space it's using by going to System Protection in Control Panel.

Yes, I have it enabled.

Does disk manager show that the whole drive is partitioned etc?

Yes. If you look at the first picture link, it shows that 465 GB is for the primary partition.

I've cleared all the restore points and shadow storage. There is less than 3 GB of system restore data. I checked this both in the terminal and System Protection as you indicated.

I've seen this happen on external HDDs formatted with NTFS. A re-format cleared it up good.

I just tried scanning with TreeSize and it seems to have found the problem. Turns out it's from Lenovo's Rescue and Recovery program. Weird thing is that the backups don't show in the Rescue and Rcovery application or on any other hard drive scanner.. they are stored on a hidden file that is hard to access. Anyways, I'll find a way to delete it. Thanks for the responses.

This sort of thing is why I happily reformatted my Lenovo laptop we bought late last year. Extra partitions for recovery, hidden backups, etc.
