I was in two weddings this past spring. We stood for the entire ceremony and decided that we looked stupid with the bottom button undone. We did all three and looked nice and sleek. If you plan to sit down at all you should not button the bottom, but for standing situations it can be fine. Fashion be damned.

The irony is that people think leaving a button open on a suit is considered trendy. Wearing an opened collared shirt without a tie, or perhaps a different cut or color I could see being trendy, but a button?

I don't wear suits very often anyway. I suppose I just don't get it.

The no bottom button rule has been around since the old days, when some fat king couldn't get his fastened, so he made his whole court do the same.

I believe suits are cut now so that the suit fits properly when only the top/middle button is buttoned. If you button the bottom button, it throws the balance off (pulls the shoulders apart or something). On a 3 button suit you can get away with top+middle.

You only button the top 2 on a 3 button suit. The reason for this is that when you do up all 3, the coat will look retarded when you sit.

If you are walking outside and it's windy / rainy, you are supposed to do the 3rd button so you don't look like a bum and have your suit flailing all over the place.

I don't really consider this a Big Deal, but if you're applying for a job that involves regularly wearing tailored clothes, showing up with the bottom button buttoned might be the tiebreaker that keeps you from getting the job. It really makes you look like a rube.

As for whether to button the top button on a 3-button suit, it depends on my mood and the cut of the jacket. I have some on which I normally button it, but today I'm wearing an Armani Collezioni jacket that I think looks better with just the middle button secured.
