I'd probably button the top button in that situation. Less "hip" people are always like "you forgot to button your top button" and then I have to explain it to them.

Yes, just don't button the bottom button.
Actually, damn fashion, button the whole thing up. I don't want to see anything extra!

if you are uncomfortable, leave the bottom open.

otherwise, all 3 buttons should be buttoned, as it makes you look tidy.

edit: i rescind my above statement 😱

When it comes to men's suit/sport jackets, if there is more than one button, the bottom button should never be buttoned.

These days it is also trendy to leave the top button unbuttoned if there are 3 or more buttons.

What? Did your mom dress you?

You never button the bottom button.

btw, in the OP, you say that it's friendly if you wear a buttoned top. it's not about what you wear; it's about how friendly you come off as. if you joke around with your interviewers (professionally) during the interview, that's a huge plus. i remember my supervisor writing down during my interview that i'm serious yet i have a sense of humor (i joked around with the guys during my interview), and it landed me my current job.

spidey07: i'm a girl... i don't wear man suits very often. 😛 however, i've seen how guys dress to interviews often enough.
