Pretender,
A friend of mine in the early 80's crashed his 'vette into a tree about 12" in diameter. Best I could figure, he was running about 70 - 80, maybe 90 mph in a curve (going to the left), ran off the right side of the road and panicked. Upon doing so, he jerked the wheel to the left to get her back on the road, which then caused the car to spin out of control. Somehow, and I still can't figure it out, he ended up spinning to the left towards the inside of the curve, went up a 10' embankment into a person's yard and hit a tree just in front of the right passenger door and windshield. Cut the car right in half, except for leaving it hanging on about 1 inch of the frame below him. Tore the floorpans out of the car, threw the engine about 100 - 150 ft into a neighbors yard. The passenger had both of his ankles severely broken, but lived to tell about it. My friend wasn't so lucky. His head hit the tree, killing him instantly

He was a great kid.
I had warned him not to drive that car when he was upset about his girlfriend, which he was at the time he was killed. Four days later is when the accident happened.
So you see, a tree can do extensive damage to a car. What happened to that viper looks very much like it hit a tree. The guy that walked away from that, was indeed, very lucky.
BTW, the tree my friend hit was only lightly damaged.
Rest in peace my friend.
