I've narrowed down my choice for a 17' Trinitron monitor to the KDS AV-7TF or the Samsung 700 NF; both can be had for under 300 bucks. Any comments or suggested alternatives? Thanks much!

Avoid KDS. We started buying them here... and have had LOADS of them come right out of the box dead... several died.. one other "Smoke Checked" (Yes, the Avitron Models)

We now buy Princeton (not a big improvement, but at least they work)

avitrons are awesome, first time hearing they were DOAs in large quantity... whitedog, maybe you company better switch the supplier? ;) they are about the same, except samsung has the BNC input. just go with whatever comes out to be cheaper with less hassle (better if without rebates)

I haven't seen the KDS, but I own the 700NF and find it to be absolutely great. I'd personally go with the Samsung since I've had good experiences with them, but then again, I haven't tried out KDS yet.

I have a kds, they have much better tech support than pretty much all monitor companies. I don tknow what samsung support is like, but KDS is top notch , i'd aviod that particular model kds as it only does 1280x1024 @ 60hz max. get the 19" one if you are gonna buy a kds, or one of the cheaper 19" visual sensations they sell.

I love KDS, and they have the best support department. I recommend them.

best choice for a 17" flat monitor is not either of these manufacturers.

If you want a kickass monitor, you have no choice but to go iiYama. I got one of the visionmaster pro 410s for 300$ refurb with a 2 year warranty. It will do 1600x1200 at 75hz. Nuff said.

That really is a hard question. There has been many threads on KDS Avitron vs. Samsung NF and they really are a tie. The 700NF has a better max resolution and better refresh rates though. It also has a BNC port but that doesn't matter to most people since they don't use it.

The Sony tube the KDS uses and the Mitsubishi tube the Samsung uses are very similar. Some say one Sony tube is better, some say Mitsubishi. According the to the KDS website, the AV-7TF supports 1280x1024@60hz and 1024x768@85hz. 60hz is bad, but that isn't an issue if you won't be running at 1280x1024. The warranties on the two are very similar too. If you want the better resolutions and/or BNC port, go for the 700NF. If those two things don't matter, then maybe go with whatever one is cheaper.

And about iiYama. While I do agree they make great monitors, I wouldn't spend $300 for a refurbished one. When it comes to a monitor, I would rather spend the money to get a new one. The 700NF can do 1600x1200@75hz anyway too.

Samsung 700NF 1600x1200 at 76hz.
Not that you'll use that on a 17" anyway.
I've got the 900NF (1600x1200 @ 88hz) and its pretty nice, has BNC etc too.
No experience with KDS though.

Compare inperson if possible.
If not, I'd just get the cheaper one since both should be good.

So....it sounds pretty even so far! I didn't have much luck searching for previous threads, hence my post. As far as iiyama, I checked out their website....based on a little digging a VisionMaster 410 can be had for under 400 bucks shipped. It begs the question as to how much to spend on a monitor (17" at that; I'm trying to stick with 17" due to space limitations). So far I've found the prices to be pretty close on the two I first considered. KDS for $238 shipped from Onvia and $256 on the Samsung from ChaseShop. Opinions anyone?

dudleydocker:

I don't know how you're searching, but I typed Samsung into the Search form for General Hardware and Video and I came up with more than 45 results. KDS returned more than 20 results.

I have been researching this for well over a couple months and I have to say that the 700nf is at the top of my list. I am about to purchase one as we speak.

What is this BNC port you are talking about? What's it for?

BNC is a type of hookup, used instead of the included D-SUB cable. There is a thread, here I think, about whether BNC gives better results or not, costs maybe $20. Haven't tried it yet.

That's some lousy refresh rates for the KDS, for the few extra dollars I'd say go for the Samsung if those numbers matter to you.

In my case the 900NF was cheaper than the KDS AV-195TF.

Yes, i would also go with teh Samsung over the KDS. In terms of quality i think they are near equal and although KDS has a very good warranty/replacement program, I have heard about some KDS monitors dying on people after a couple of months so i'd stick with Samsung.

I looked at this monitor the plus 91 and it has awesome picture quality. do you guys think the samsung 900 nf is better???? Im getting ready to order the Diamond plus 91 for $400 shipped let me know .

The 900nf has much better refresh rates than the mistubishi and therefore making it much better.

Anyways, the 900nf and the plus 91 are both 19 inch monitors! A little off-topic?

We might be confusing dudleydocker with all this 19 inch talk!

Dang, LXi, it took you a while to get in here ... ;) ;) ;)

Just an FYI to the original poster, I think Sony might have some $50 rebates on 17inchers right now. The Sony CRT's (used in Sony, KDS, IBM, Mag ?, and others) are a bit better than the Mitsubishi CRT's (used in Mitsubishi, Iiyama, Samsung, etc.). Grille pitch is 0.24 for the entire display area, while on the Mitsubishi tubes it is variable, 0.25 at center, 0.27 outer. Perhaps this is why I see more people complain about slight geometry problems with a Mitsubishi CRT-based monitor, vs. a monitor based on the Sony Trinitron CRT, not sure, but I've owned both and think the Sony CRT is a bit "tighter", and also the colors may be a bit truer, at least to my eyes. I've been negative on Sony brand name monitors in this Forum of late, but that has only been because of a poor packaging design for their 19inchers that was allowing damage in transit, and I wouldn't necessarily hold that against their 17inchers. Otherwise, I would definitely take a real Sony over anything else.

dudleydocker take a look at the 17 inch Diamond plus in person if you can. because Specs and Refresh rates dont make a monitor better PICTURE QUALITY DOES lol.

Well, I know for a fact that the Samsung monitors are rated just second to the Sony monitors in many attributes like quality, and the Samsungs even beat the Sony monitor's refresh rates and resolutiojns in many cases.

Midnight rambler- I was thinking the same thing about LXi

<<best choice for a 17" flat monitor is not either of these manufacturers.>>

Samsung can make KDS and Iiyama dissappear tomorrow if they wanted to. Not saying they're the absolute best or most powerful, but they're just as good if not better than Iiyama. Im sorry but your statements just dont justify themselves.

Why the hell would you want to waste your hard earned money on a refurb when you can get the brand new Samsung with 3 year warranty, same specs and lower prices? God, would somebody please research before pulling anything out of their arse.
