My first post:

Found the Staples add for the NEC FE700 17" monitor $279.99 with a $100.00 rebate to make it $179.99. Use the $40 off $200 and you get it for 139.99 plus tax.

Also at Staples is the Samsung 753DF for $223.99 with a $30.00 Samsung rebate to make it 193.99. Use the $40 off $200.00 here and you get it for $153.99.

Which would be the best deal of the 2???

The Samsung is a bit more expensive but I think the premium is worth it. Most reviews I've seen don't rate NEC very high, whereas Samsung often get the top nod. Also, NEC's warranty says that for replacement, they can send a comparable model, and when my father's E700 broke down after a year of use and was sent in for repair, they sent back an A700+ which has .28 vs .25 dp. The refresh rate is also lower. Turns out there was no replacement part for the power switch! They didn't even include a driver, which although not absolutely necessary does make getting a high refresh rate a lot easier and safer (win98se nor win95 support it outright).

tsee,

I guarantee you that NEC owns the Samsung. The NEC FE700 uses an excellent Mitsubishi Diamondtron NF aperture grille flat CRT while the Samsung 753DF uses Samsung's proprietary shadow mask flat CRT, which is considered inferior to Sony and Mitsu's flat CRTs. Considering the NEC is cheaper, I would definitely go with that. Check out the top 10 monitors at PCWORLD. 6 out of 10 use a Diamondtron NF. The NEC FE700 is #5. Samsung 753DF, not on the chart.

Just trying to help reduce the spread of misinformation.

Linuxguy,

The add was in the paper. I have to call Staples to verify it though. I went to the B&M and they didn't have a form for it either. Will let you know if something comes up.

Thanks for the info all.

Chewbacca, I'm not saying you're wrong, but just because one magazine rates a monitor high, doesn't neccesarily mean anything. Take a look at CNET's monitor reviews. Samsung is all over the top 5's. Who do you believe?? My point is, often times, manufacturers will provide a little incentive for magazines or websites to rate their products favorably. To get a better idea, you would need to do a more comprehensive search.

Duh? The PCWorld ranking has Samsung #2. With that model in the "test", I am sure they didn't even bother to have the 753DF even in it. But with the same tube, the Samsung smokes the NEC. And the 753DF is considered more of their "budget" flat screen. There is also the 755DF that has better resolution. The 700IFT is more top of the line.

I ordered the 753DF back with the Buy.Com deal. I love it. I have had no problems and it is quite clear. I recommend it.

The Staples NEC $100 rebate is online now. Just enter NEC to search by manufacturer in the rebate center: Link

Staples has $100 rebates on the following NEC models:
FE700, FE700+, FE950, FE950+
The 950s are 19" Mitsubishi monitors
Anyone know what the "+" is for?

The FE950 regular Staples price $450
$450 - $40(coupon) - $100(rebate) = $310 + tax
FE950
NOTE: The rebate info on that page says $50, but if you click on it you will see a rebate for $100

It would be even hotter if someone could find a PM for either the FE700 or the FE950. Just remember if you find it at a .com you have to include the cost of overnight shipping. So far, I haven't come close to the price without the rebate or the coupon when overnight shipping is included!

Guys, I think you missed the point. I wasn't slamming Samsung as a brand. I nearly bought a Samsung recently to replace my aging Mitsubishi. I was simply comparing the two models in question, the NEC FE700 and the Samsung 753DF. Since tsee was recommending the Samsung even though it was more expensive, I thought I would point out the merits of the NEC. Samsung, does indeed hold the #2 spot on the chart I linked to, but with a different model (700NF) that is more similar to the NEC FE700 than to the Samsung 753DF. Check the reviews and the specs. poncekim, I research any hardware *extensively* before I buy as I'm not the type who buys a new video card/CPU every 6 months (nothing wrong with that if you've got the cash) and since monitors need to last even longer, its an even more important decision. I don't want to know how many hours I spent reading reviews and doing searches before I bought my new monitor but I think I have a grasp of most current brands/products. I actually kinda enjoy the whole process of pouring over reviews, specs, and charts to figure out what to buy. I'm definitely not an impulse shopper. I didn't buy an FE700 but I would have at this price.

Anyhoo, my advice is, between these two models, go with the NEC. The Samsung is good, but the NEC is better, not to mention cheaper.

Good deal cvgman. I had a cheap 17in burn out at work today. I went for the FE700. No problem using coupon and getting rebate form.

Thanks
