17" LCD to a 19" Flat CRT a downgrade?

I've been pretty satisfied with my 17" GEM LCD with 25ms on d-sub. It is very crisp and shows little or no ghosting, but contrast isn't as good as I would like it. I've switched to LCD almost 7 months back from an aging Viewsonic P773 (3 years old) that gave me eye sores.

I went to a friend's house recently who just purchased a new viewsonic 17" flat screen CRT and it looks utterly amazing. I was so used to staring at slightly faded soft images on my LCD, his new viewsonic was like the next best thing. I have since placed some interest in the ViewSonic E90f+SB 19" PerfectFlat CRT Monitor. What do you guys think about this monitor? Is this a worthy upgrade or a good downgrade.

A little about me: I am a hardcore gamer and the reason why I purchased an LCD was because my old monitor's "dark" was too dark and "light" was way too light. I also noticed this phenomenon in higher contrasted LCD's (500:1) and makes counterstrike gaming in dark hallways IMPOSSIBLE! Does this monitor have this problem?

Well as for playing games w/ dark hallways... just turn the gama up... works every time. BTW those CRT's are very nice. Never used one myself, but have seen plenty at best buy and such. If I were to buy one now that would probably be the one... or a KDS w/ a triton tube.. I dont have any problems playing games on my Samsung 191T (LCD 19"). But then again, that's just me!

No I don't think that would be a down grade at all maybe a side grade or something. It really depends if u were using the LCD to save room or something if not go for the CRT you won't be disapointed.

Do CRT's still have that annoying clicking sound after changing resolutions? Has anyone used this viewsonic b4 and give me a short review or suggestions on other monitors, LCD or CRT thats best for gaming?

Go for the Viewsonic G90F because it has a better screen and it is perfectly flat unlike the E model. However, still that monitor is not perfectly flat as teh outside glass shield is but the tube still has a 5% divergence on the sides.

NEC and Samsung 19 inch models are good monitors as well, they had a couple updates recently so i am not sure abou the exact model numbers.

I have an NEC 22" and the colours are completely amazing....upgrade from a 17" Sony H93W to it, well worth it.

CRT's all the way. Get a 19in CRT flat screen monitor capable of sRGB color. That is very important. It will solve all your dark problems in CS. Sometimes gamma isn't all you need.

No clicking sound here.

NEC Multisync FP912SB, that is a good one.

lol..... why would you care about a click sound? no one changes resolutions often enough for that to be a problem

BTW

I think LCD's suck personally . I would go for the viewsonic
I have an a90f+ and its great

while i'm not a hardcore gamer, but i do do a lot of graphics, in 2d.

I have used mid range 17" flat panels before, but they can't hold a candle to my 19" Trinitron. the clarity, colors, and contrast are superior. on the other hand, I have seen some kick a55 flat panels, but they are ususally very expensive. i tend to like the ones with glass screens like those apple studio displays. i have yet to see a 17" in the 300-600 price range that can beat my trinitron.

i'd go for the crt, but consider sony instead of viewsonic. maybe its psychological, but even the viewsonic monitors with trinitron technology don't impress me as much as sony

E90f = flat (f=flat) ? only difference to a G90f is that the G series has a slightly different (better?) screen coating and runs higher refresh rates. The A series is a retail (Office Depot, Staples) version of the E series. A90f = E90f.

I?m sitting in front of a Viewsonic E70f and this monitor never ceases to amaze me with its color saturation clarity and contrast. My brother has 3 year old 17? aperture-grille (sony tube) CRT and whenever he sees graphics on my monitor he thinks his CRT is faded. Viewsonic uses the same screen technology ?phosphors, glass, dot pitch etc on all their flat monitors so even the inexpensive E and A series look great. When shopping for my 17? I compared my Viewsonic to a much more expensive Sony AG sitting on the shelf and thought it had overall better picture quality. Although I liked the Sony flat technology a little better.

The inexpensive monitors are more limited in refresh rates and resolutions so you need to check that carefully depending on what resolution you want to run. My 17? is limited to 10x7 at 87Hz, 12x10 only runs 66Hz so it?s not really usable.

I will also say that the graphics card and drivers can be a factor in how good things look on a monitor too. I thought the ATI 3.6?s colors looked more washed out than the 3.4?s, so I went back to the 3.4?s which I?m still using.

i was just in the same boat as you , still kept the LCD but i wont go back to it for my main machine

Syncmaster for price/performance is all im going to need for a while!

: )

Some CRTs click, some don't. Some make a annoying high pitch whine when changing resplutions

I went from a 19" flat screen CRT to a 17" digital LCD. Even though a CRT is still better for gaming, LCDs are good enough for gaming and the other benefits of LCDS made me switch to a LCD.

Wow guys, thanks for all your input! I am trying to stick with a monitor under $240, are the NEC's better than viewsonics at the price? The box shaped NEC monitors and weird refreshrate ratings kinda scared me off.

BTW, how much better is the G90F over the E90F? In Newegg, the G90F has quite a bit of shipping cost, and I don't want to exceed $240 before tax after shipping.

Please give me links on where I can purchase these monitors 😀, thanks that would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I thought i'd let u guys know i won't be exceeding 1600X1200 in resolution, but I would wish for a good refresh rate to play games at that resolution.

If you played CS you'll know what i mean... everytime you enter menu's or go into desktop to change servers, or if something happens that screws up the game, you'll be hearing ALOT of clicking...

If the noises made while changing resolutions are really anonying to you, I recommend staying away from the NEC "FE", line. They have sharper text IMO, but the noises made can be annoying

My CTX PR-960FL never made any noises while change resolutions and had a Trinitron tube. But mine died and spent more time in the shop than me using it... I'll blame it on being a lemon though.

You can check the detailed specs of the Viewsonics at their site.

?. ??.E90f/G90f

16x12 ?68/77Hz
12x10 ?80/90Hz

You can see from those numbers the E90f really won?t do 16x12 at acceptable refresh rates and the G90f may just be barely acceptable at 16x12. I need to be in the mid 80?s my self so I don?t notice the flicker.

I think it depends on what you do most with your computer. I'd go for a CRT for gaming, but for normal use with 2D programs like word or web browsing, then I'd take an LCD anyday.

My PC is used mainly for browsing (these forums) and a lot of gaming. It's also an HTPC, I watch HDTV on the LCD, as well as DVDs, and listen through my Creative Gigaworks system. The disadvantage to an LCD for this application is that no LCD can display 1080i, since that resolution is 1920x1080... When displaying that on my hitachi CRT it looks amazing, since the player software deinterlaces it to make it 1080p.... Whereas my LCD can only do 720p (1280x720) HDTV resolution.

I'll be getting some sort of 27-34" tube TV for my HTPC purposes soon, but for now, the LCD looks pretty good. Oh, but it makes things like the Simpsons and King of the Hill look WAY too bright.

Same here and I do consider myself a GAMER.

I'd class it as an upgrade.

Word.

Upgrade here too. All LCDs must be burnt in a pile in the middle of the city.

Lol, why do you say that? I got a Samsung 192t and much prefer it to the CRTs I have around the house (Mitsu 2040u and Sony G520p). I am no longer buying CRTs due to how much better I think the LCDs are. And a game a lot.
