17" LCD Recommendations

I am wanting to purchase a 17-inch LCD monitor aimed at a budget in the $400-500 range. Planned usage includes frequent watching of movies and occasional FPS gaming.

The following monitors are what I am currently deciding upon:

Hitachi CML174B
NEC LCD1760V
Samsung SyncMaster 710T
Samsung 172X

The 710T specs seem to be better than the 172X and it is cheaper...is there a catch? I cannot seem to find that particular Hitachi model on either newegg/monitordirect anymore. And although I hear the Dell UltraSharp 1703FP is a good choice, I don't like its aesthetics. I also prefer monitors w/o speakers.

Any users here that could give me feedback on any of these models or other suggestions would be appreciated!

I would suggest NEC. You really get what you pay for with those. Also just imo i think there one of the best brands of good looking high quality monitors out there...😀

I picked up a NEC 1765 when OfficeMax was clearing them out--It's a beautiful LCD. Two "flaws"
1) The whole unit shakes when I bump my desk
2) It has a reflective coating, so not suitable for a room with uncontrollable sunlight.

I play UT2k4 on it without any ghosting.

I think my choice is leaning to the 710T.

Howcome LCD reviews are so scarce? I'm used to seeing at least a couple of "Must Buy" models that is recommended by all. The only monitor that seems to have this much recognition right now is the Dell 2100FP.

Need more undisputed picks for buyers ^_^

Yea, That's the only problem. Reflective coating.
It's Very nice monitor though.

I personally go with NEC LCD1760V.

Has anyone seen both the 710T and the 172x in action? If so, which one is better. THe 710T is cheaper, and I've read great reviews of it, but I just want to see if anyone's noticed a difference between the two.

I picked up the 710T a few weeks ago when there was the Dell 10% sale and a $35 coupon. I haven't seen a lot of LCD monitors in person so I can't make comparisons. For my requirements -- I needed both DVI and VGA inputs and something with a good viewing angle -- I've been very happy with the 710T.

how about gaming?

I don't do much gaming on this particular setup -- it's a HTPC with the VGA out connected to a DLP projector, and the LCD on the DVI. When it does games it's usually with friends watching on the 100" screen. 🙂 I've briefly brought up Everquest and also watched a little HDTV on it but not enough to make serious gaming judgements on the 710T. I did see that Tom's Hardware reviewed this panel (well, the 172x which I think uses the same panel) and noted that despite the 12ms response, they still preferred the 16ms panels for hardcore gaming.

I give my vote AGAINST the Samsung. Too expensive, and every panel I got (3, with different serial runs from different stores) had one or more dead pixels. I'd recommend if you can save, so for the Dell 2001FP.

Get an Acer 20ms response time LCD. My 2nd lcd, having it for 2 mos now. Great for gaming, very satisfied.
