17" LCD Recommendation for watching DVDs and playing a few games

I want to get a 17" LCD for use primarily browsing the web, watching DVDs, and playing the occasional FPS (nothing like Need for Speed). I've been looking around, and most LCDs are either 25ms or 16ms response time, and I've heard the 25ms models have streaking in games and movies. Is this actually the case? Do I need the more expensive 16ms model or will I be OK with the 25ms?
I've been looking at the Samsung SyncMaster 172x (16ms). Is this the best LCD? I'm looking for one that's elegant to look at, and that has a thin "frame" around the screen. Any other recommendations?

Oh, and I'd really like a DVI and VGA input!

EDIT: What about the Samsung Syncmaster 712N? It's a 12ms model, and a good price at CC. Only con is no DVI. $330

Also, any idea on the LG L1720P? 16ms, dual inputs, looks great. $460

Thanks.

Check out ones with the 16ms panel. The NEC 1760v, 1760NX, and 1765v are all good looking monitors, with quick response times. Hitachi and BenQ also make monitors using the same LCD panel.

I've heard lots of bad things about the 172x. Plus it's expensive...

OK, so I should skip the 172x. What's the difference in the NEC models? One's hieght adjustable and one isn't? I can't find any mention of the NEC 1765v anywhere on google.

Any specific models from Hitachi or BenQ? Isn't BenQ kind of a bargain brand?

It might just be 1765. THey have them at Best Buy, Staples, etc. It's one of those w/ the plastic covers on the front that adds contrast and protects the screen. Pretty slick looking monitor.

The 1760v doesn't have DVI, the 1760NX does, the 1765 does not.

Yes, BenQ is a bargain brand, and it will show in the bezel of the monitor, but it uses the same LCD panel underneath. I forget the name of the hitachi. It's the 16ms Hitachi.

Captain,

My computing habits seem in line with what you described .... I run an ATI 9600 AIW Pro into a NEC 1760V flat panel and love it. No ghosting or streaking, just clean video. Just installed Doom 3 and it looks awsome.

Got mine at NewEgg about a year or so ago ....

Does the coating on the 1765 make the glare really bad?

No, B&Ms only carry the 1765. The glare isn't bad, it's anti-glare, and it really adds a lot to contrast. One to check out at Compusa is the AG Neovo E19A. It's a 19" with a similar plastic front that looks GREAT and has little to no ghosting. It's only $630 too.
