17" laptops with dual-link DVI output?

I have a 30" Dell 3007 monitor that only accepts dual-link DVI. I'd love to drive it directly with a laptop (w/o using a docking station). FYI, I am a trader and need this laptop for viewing charts, not for gaming.

I'm trying to find out which laptops (not considering Apple) currently have dual-link DVI output, that have 17" 1920x1200 screens.

So far, I have only found the Clevo M570RU-U and the Dell XPS M1730 (too flashy for my taste). I was excited about the Dell Precision M6400, but it doesn't appear to have dual-link DVI output, just Diplayport (which the 3007 monitor cannot accept).

Are there any others? I went to Gateway's site but couldn't find where they explicitly state dual-link DVI output.

Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

Thank you Harvey, but that search turns up infomation that is no longer current. I have researched this question for a couple of days and wasn't getting anywhere, hence my post here.

If your monitor accepts an analog video signal through the DVI connector, all you need is the right cable. If your monitor's DVI input is strictly digital you'll need an A/D adapter.

Here's the results for searching for VGA to "DVI-D". It could be expensive so I guess it depends on what you find and whether it's worth it for your applications.

Here's one example from the above links:

VGA to DVI-D Analog/Digital Convertor.

Thanks again Harvey. I do appreciate your input.

I would love to compile a list of current laptops that output dual-link DVI within this post, as 30" monitors are becoming more and more commonplace, and it's nice not to have to deal with the overhead of a docking station.

However, if it turns out the list is so small that we must resort to docking stations, I know that the Dell Precision M6400 E\Port docking station has dual DVI output, but I'm not sure if it's dual-link. I will post that info here if I can locate it.

That is a whole different discussion. Let's keep this thread on topic please.

It is a 17" laptop, with a 1920*1200 resolution screen, with dual-link DVI. How am I off-topic? A simple one-word answer will suffice. Price. You can say it, its fine. Or you can say that you don't want to use OS X, and would rather not deal with possible driver issues if you install Windows.

Okay, okay...let me re-state. 🙂

Who else, besides Apple and Dell (edit: and Clevo), makes such a beast?

Re: why not Apple - you're right, I guess it's a combination of all the things you mentioned. The other minor reason is that I really like having a two-button touch pad. Many of the functions I use for trading (the software is called 'Tradestation' and is only for a PC platform) are accessed by right-clicking. I do realize I can buy an Intel-based Powerbook and run XP Pro.

I guess if the Clevo doesn't pan out (and the Dell XPS M1730 is definitely WAY too flashy for me), then maybe Apple will be the only game in town.

But the real purpose of this post is to simply compile a list of all laptops currently available, that are 17", available with 1920x1200 res, that have dual-link DVI output.

So I'll start:

1. Apple Macbook Pro
2. Dell XPS M 1730
3. Clevo M570RU-U (99% certain this does)
4. Sager 9262(?)

Thanks again.

This is getting tricky. Most all of the laptops these days are packing HDMI, which I think the jury is still a little out as to whether or not HDMI can drive a dual link signal or not.

what about something like a DualHead2Go or TripleHead2Go ? http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/

Can that be combined to create a dual-link signal? The OP already has an existing Dell 3007 display.

To the OP, you may be able to get a cable that converts displayport to dual link DVI. I know that it has bandwidth for it.

Thanks - that's an excellent suggestion. I think Dell should have this dongle ready sometime this month for their Mx400 series Precision laptops.

If you didn't have the 1920*1200 resolution requirement (which is fine, you need screen real estate, I get it) then that would open up a few more laptops. Not many though since way too many in the industry are transitioning to HDMI.

Thanks. Speaking of HDMI, is there an adapter available that would take the HDMI out from a laptop and convert it to dual-link DVI? I have seen several DVI-D adapters on Amazon and eBay, but none state that they are dual-link.

That would solve my problem, and as you mentioned, HDMI laptops are becoming more and more available.

Clarification: I have found adapters that state that they are dual-link. What I should have said is that none say anything about 2560x1600 support. Maybe that's implied.

You could also get a two button mouse to use the Apple Macbook Pro. However, they will be refreshing the line soon so you may have to consider other options.

Thanks.

It might. You want to make sure that any HDMI laptop that you get supports HDMI 1.3, and that is specifies High-Speed. That way you can ensure that it supports the 2560*1600 resolution that you need.

Great, thank you. It seems the most painless way to go is to forget about looking for dual-link DVI laptops, and just look for a laptop with HDMI 1.3, which also meets my other requirements. Now I have the challenge of trying to figure out which version of HDMI the laptops I'm considering have. ;-)

Maybe any HDMI-equipped laptop from late 2008 onward has 1.3? Or maybe I shouldn't assume that...
