17- Inch monitors

I have been looking at the 17 inch samsung 755df. Samsung tubes are supposed to be rated just second under trinitron tubes.
I know that this is going to return a lot of stuff about sonys, so i say it now that my budget is roughly 250 and absolutely not higher. I am looking for a 17 inch monitor with a good dot pitch say .25 or better and 16 inch viewable and i am going to be using it for mostly games, and internet usage. I have a geforce ddr so i want something to compliment it well.

Definitely 755DF, its DynaFlat, AF70 is nothing against 755DF. I highly recommend the 700NF as well if you can spend a little bit more.

I have a NEC FE700 17" I think they start at about $244 on pricewatch.com.. but you may have trouble finding it instock for under $279. I like this monitor better than my old Sony 15" trinitron... 😉

what does the 700nf have which the 755df doesn't? what makes it better?

by the way, of course, thanks for the responses LXi and Mutilator

The 755DF is based on their own DynaFlat tube, the 700NF is based on Mitsubishi's DiamondTron tube, the 700NF has higher res and refresh rate, higher price as well. That is baiscally the difference between the two.

700NF is based on the Mitsubishi Natural Flat tube. Its like the SOny FDtron...but mitsubishi....i have a 900NF....i am very satisfied with it.

Yea, the refresh rates will be higher on 1024x768 with 700NF, and if you plan to use resolutions like 1280x1024 and 1600x1200, 700NF is highly recommended. If 1024x768 is the only res you'll need, then 755DF is fine.

i think that 1152x868 is probably the highest i will run the monitor since anything higher will just be too small to read or anything on a 17-inch.

Have you seen the difference between an Aperture Grille monitor and a Shadow Mask monitor? If so, which one do you prefer? I just checked onvia.com and the 700NF is $289 while the 755DF is $20 cheaper. I think its worth it. Dont forget there is $30 coupon, possible 10% discount and free shipping if you buy from onvia.com.

i have been hearing all about coupons at onvia, but how do i actually get or use one?

which one is shadow mask and which one is apertures grille of the 755df and 700nf, i know that shadowmasks suck at games, so i want to avoid it

the difference between a apeture grill and shadow mask is this. A apeture grill lets in more light, thus having better color and brightness. The good shadow mask however is usually better with text and fine detail like for using excel and work and stuff. Neither would be "bad" at games, i dont think it really makes a difference as you probably wont notice any difference in monitor quality with games, even with a value monitor and a pro one.

If you havent seen AG and SM, it might be a good idea to go to a store and take a look for yourself. Personally I would always take a good AG monitor over an SM. However there are people who hate the AG monitors because of those two thin lines.

Have you checked the KDS Avitron 17"? .24, flat Sony Trinitron tube. The picture is fantastic, and the warranty as well (3 years, they come and pick you from your place and give you another one).

seeing how the 700nfs is nowhere to be found, i did find a 700ift. That's way out of budget. I am not the one purchasing the monitor here, it is my very stingy dad which is going to purchase it for me.

What exactly is your budget anyway? You never told us. Onvia.com has it for $289, get a $30 coupon, 10% discount from pointclick, and free shipping. This monitor is an unbelievable deal. Or get the 755DF instead for $269, coupon, discount and free shipping also applies.
