Customer Reviews of MSI R5870 Lightning:

Cons: Everything! Had 13, yes 13 of these 5870's andalso the gigabyte 5870's i went through 4 of and ALL were DOA's! I don't know if AMD is releasing bad chips or what but stay away! I love AMD to death but I went and bought 4 GTX 470s and all worked!

Uh, okay now. One DOA? Okay that happens. 17 DOA in a row across two brands? Alright, something else is causing it. :hmm:

He probably didn't realize they needed power connected to them or something simple. Oh and the liar part is probably true also. The turnaround time would be pretty substantial going through RMA for that many cards even if he bought 3 at a time.

I wonder what percentage of technology problems involve power cables not being plugged in. The realization of such a number might just be the end of my faith in human intelligence.

Problem between keyboard and chair. Newegg reviews are generally not the best source of info.

It's called a PEBKEC. 😛

I'm sure either he isn't powering it, his PSU is frying it, his PSU is underpowered for it, or something is shorting out.

nope i've seen a mobo (from more than 1 distributor/warehouse) all defective - different lots. unstable with all combo parts swapped. happens. the biggest problem is the $$ wasted trying to figure out why!

"what do you mean i'm doing something wrong?! i'm running my computer underwater in my bathtub its called water cooling DUH"

You mean like this? 🙂

I got a MSI 4850, it's a quality part. I don't think his claim of more than a dozen is true. probably just exaggerating. either that or something in his setup is messing with the graphics cards he gets.

Thirteen!?!?!

I was going to go with an "ID 10 T" keyboard error, but switching my opinion to pathological liar. I think he meant he had 4 DOAs out of 13, which is... possible. But unlikely. More likely he's full of crap, or doesn't have a PSU capable of 1500 watts sustained out.

Has the part even been around long enough for 13 RMAs to be plausible?

The earliest reviews that I could find were around mid March. That was about 3 months ago. I have a hard time believing that the RMA turnaround time (including troubleshooting with support each time, shipping, etc.) is only a week. If the RMA turnaround is really a week, I will definitely by buying MSI video cards in the future!

That was my initial thought too, but then I thought, it's plausible to buy all 13 at once, I guess.. in the same way it's "plausible" all 13 could be DOA.
