I have a friend who is looking at getting a good well priced 17" CRT Monitor. He does not want to pay top dollar for it (i.e. Sony) but is willing to pay a bit extra for it to get a bit better quality. He wants a flat screen.

Could you all help him out and give some advice as to what to buy and what to stay away from??

I have a 19" so I am not researched in 17" market. The main players in 17"flat screens here in Western Australia seem to be Samsung 765MB $305, LG 700B flatron $255, LG710B $205, ADI $219, Mitsubishi DV1786FD $305, Phillips 107X $269, Hyundai Flat $209.

My parents have a 17" NEC MultiSync FE770 on their system that looks very nice, though it does have the infamous two horizontal lines. It's priced at about $150-$170 USD. Would recommend it highly so long as the two lines aren't a problem. Personally I'm using a Samsung SyncMaster 950b 19" which only cost me $175USD, which is certainly a good low-cost option to consider, but I admit it's not of quite the same quality as the NEC.

I've never had a very high quality monitor... but right now I have a 17 inch Samtron 76DF that I got from Best Buy for $80 after rebates. It's obviously not the best, but it works great... on screen controls are easy to use, color is great, text is crisp, it'll run 1024x768 @ 85 Hz, which is adequate for gaming. It'll run 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz too if you prefer, but my eyes can't take the screen flicker at 60 Hz.
