I still chose the new Plextor over the new Yamaha. This was discussed in another thread. BurnProof is a big reason why. On the Yamaha, even 8 MB of buffer is gonna dry up mighty fast at 16X! (Still, incredible specs!)

Waste-Proof? Write Strategy which maximizes stability of the recording environment

I doubt it, 'maximizing stability' doesnt sound much like completely pausing and waiting for the buffer to fill, and then resuming a burn :)

If they did have something like burn-proof, I'm sure it would be clearly shown and highlighted in the specs.

The whole point here is, that buffer underrun really isn't an issue anymore. The only time I ever had problems with it is when my computer wasn't fast enough and my CD-RW drive didn't have a buffer. I had an old 2x and a 300mhz amd k6 and this is the ONLY time I've run out since having an 8x drive. I'm about to purchase the 16x drive because I've read review information on it at a website which reviews cdr/cdrw drives and they've done tons of torture tests on this yamaha drive and were unable to produce a coaster. Burn-Proof, while a nice option, is not the ONLY WAY TO PREVENT COASTERS. So many of you people are forgetting that there are other alternatives. This reminds me of when AMD first joined the CPU market, people were SO SET on the fact that AMD had compatibility issues, wasn't as fast, wasn't as good. Look at AMD now. MANY people in this and other forms support it and currently, AMD has the fastest CPU out there because Intel couldn't get anything over 1 ghz right! Let's face it, Burn-Proof is not the only technology which will prevent coasters. I'm going with the Yamaha based on people who have TESTED it and used it personally. I doubt anyone on this forum has, but regardless, this is an EXCELLENT drive for nearly the same price as the plextor, but a bit more performance and faster audio rip.

The 8mb buffer will run out quickly on the drive. If you burn at 16x(150kb) is about 2.4mb per second, so the buffer will last just over 3 seconds. That's about the same amount of time that the 4mb buffer will last on my current Yamaha 8x4x24 ide drive when I write at 8x speed. I'm sure it won't matter as much for this drive vs. the ide version since it's scsi, though.

Does this drive support DAO-RAW in clonecd? My Yamaha only supports SAO-RAW as do all other Yamaha cd-rw drives listed on the clonecd webpage.

I can't wait until I get my Plextor 12x10x32 scsi drive. Why is UPS, so slow?

Heh....nowadays they're writing to the media faster than we can even read from it! (well, almost...).

hehehe.

SCSI cards are pretty cheap....SCSI is totaly worth it I believe...I just love my SCSI setup...

I'd go SCSI HD's too, but cost and noise are two big minuses....oh well.
