16x DVD Player Toshiba Question

I've never had a DVD-Player before. Got one here on FS/FT. It is a Toshiba 16x DVD Player. Nero Says it reads to spec and it seems to perform plays perfectly. However when I use a dvd ripper it only seems to rip at 2-3x speed. Should it not rip at a much higher speed? I know when you rip a CD - it functions much closer to the drive's stated spec.

The model is Toshiba SD-M1612 if that helps. . .
 
From what I've heard some DVD drives are locked at certain speed. I remember there was firmware to update this. You might try dvdhelp.com to find out. But I do recall it was the Toshiba model that had this firmware.
