By the time 16GB memory becomes a size bottleneck (5+ years from now, at least), Windows 7 will be a dinosaur
But it will still be more popular than Windows 8.

Riiiight. You do know those 1000s of Steam games don't actually run on Linux, right? They're Windows binaries, so they need to be ported. So far we've got a couple of native titles from Valve, but that's about it. Not even a drop in the bucket.

Steam Linux is still just in beta. Once it becomes mainstream, the titles will start to follow.

Thanks to Android, Linux is now more popular than Windows. So when it comes to games, more of them are or will be made for Android/Linux than Windows, at least casual games. Looking at the games being developed from Kickstarter, Linux is becoming a popular choice for independent developers.

Windows may still get more AAA titles for the next couple of years, but I'll get what I want from Valve/Steam and independent developers.

just saying it isn't a bottleneck means nothing. you can shut everything down and just run a few browser tabs and an office document or two and need 2 or 3GB. so that means 3GB is not a bottleneck. that's meaningnless.

you can use 16gb right now, today, and not worry about doing whatever you want on your pc without having to shut down things before doing another. for example i can have as many tabs as i want in chrome open, a few word docs, a spreadsheet, Zune playing music, etc... etc.... pop open lightroom 4 and edit multiple 16MP RAW files, export them to Photoshop for a little more love, and then launch BF3 to play without having to shut a single thing down.
that might be pushing it for 8gb. right now. today.

i do it often enough, now that i don't have to worry about ram management. it's a normal bit of computing to have open for me.

This, and since popping in 16GBs was less than a hundred bucks recently, there was little reason not to do it.

It does make you lazy though . . . I kept games of Witcher 1, Civ4, and M2TW running and minimized for a few weeks before I realized it.

I think you're dreaming. Mobile phones are well away from getting AAA games ported over to them. They don't have the processing power to do so.

And with the PS4 and likely the new xbox using x86 CPU's I think you'll find Windows gaming is in a good state.

I'm sure there will be lots of angry birds clones coming to Steam Linux though.

So far, the titles hitting Steam Linux are not Angry Birds clones. Those will be hitting the Ouya console.

Phones and tablets do have the processing power already to run AAA titles, it doesn't take an obscene amount of processing power to make a good game.

He said Linux gaming, PS4 uses x86. Linux and Windows both run on x86.

And he's dead right with Linux being the platform of choice for Indie devs and Kickstarter.

Android may run on x86 but 99.9% of android devices do not run on x86 cpu's. That's where 99% of the linux gaming market is.

I'd love to see people play games like Bioshock Infinite or Skyrim on a 4" phone. Talk about an immersion killer.

I disagree. Sure, maybe plan a bit for the future but don't go overboard. 16gb is pointless for a gaming PC. Totally pointless.

Why waste money when by the time 16GB helps the rest of your PC will be obsolete anyway?

I don't agree with shortsighting myself for a mere $30-$50. Also, there's other things to consider if you're a gamer. A big one being if you're running any FRAPs for screen capturing.

So true. I've now had War Thunder AND Sim City open for over 4 days now. Sim city obviously logs me out and back in, but for War Thunder I just alt tab and bam, ready to play.

I guarantee my statement. By 2014 8gb would be the minimum requirement for intensive games like witcher 3 and bf4. 16gb would be recommended. And to stay comfortable with multitasking and quick responsiveness, you will need 32gb. This change will happen sometime between 2013 end and late 2014.

:colbert:and your qualifications for this "guarantee" ?
