Thats why I said it was "in the works".

That's the thing: "in the works" is a gamble that may never materialize. I have LG Optimus T that I bought for one of my prepaid accounts. The stock rom is horrible, and custom ROM development was abandoned before the stable ROM was out. The best custom ROM I could find has occasional problems unlocking the screen and WIFI that stops working. So if I see such glaring stuff as non working audio or video playback I'm not even going to bother buying - who knows if that stuff will ever get fixed, and even if it does, by the time it gets fixed there is a good chance you'll be able to pick some other tablet at or near the same price.

Honestly I can see development for a single phone model being developed with new phones constantly coming out but I dont see that happening with Amazon Fire HD since there are fewer tablets coming out and that is a mass market version.

Could not resist and went for the 32GB version (came out to almost $350 after tax). Coming from the original Kindle, first impressions are overwhelmingly positive. The screen is really nice, and so is the speaker sound. Performance wise it is a lot more responsive than the original Kindle. Very happy with the purchase so far.

I was a bit concerned about the additional weight of the device, but it doesn't really feel that heavy so far. Will need more time to evaluate that aspect though.

how can the bigger size kindle be worse than the smaller one?

software should be exactly the same

did they use flawed hardware components?

If you stick with the same memory and features (ie, don't take the optional cellular support in the 8.9), the only functional difference between the 7" and 8.9" models is

screen resolution (1280x800) vs (1920x1200)
cpu speed (1.2GHz OMAP4460 vs 1.5GHz OMAP4470)
and battery life (11 hours vs 10 hours) continuous use.

I was sold on the 8.9, and I was all set to buy the 8.9 when it went on sale. I proposed it to my wife and I found out she already bought me an Ipad mini.

Kinda disappointed because I am sold on the Amazon content value proposition.

** Anyway, deal is dead now. **

Ugh, why did they put such a large border around the screen, I hate the way that looks, it reminds me of my touchpad which I hate. I'll stick with my original kindle fire, jelly bean is pretty stable on that now and there are a gazillion roms for it.

I actually don't mind the slightly thicker borders, because that allows you a bit more room with a cover/case, which I definitely wanted anyway.

I'm using this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ls_o00_s00_i00

and am very happy with the results.

Before I had a tablet I always always complained about the border being too big and not looking cool. After having a tablet I LOVE big borders. So much easier to hand to other people with out screwing up whats on the screen.
