16GB (2x8GB) RAM questions...

Hey all, with 2x8GB kits of DDR3 RAM selling for $65-$100, it seems the way to go to be future proof especially when building a new system. just a few questions:

1) Why is it that the timing always drops when you get larger sticks of RAM? ie 2x2GB had 7-7-7-21, 2x4GB had 9-9-9-24, & now 2x8GB has 10-10-10-24. Why is that and does it effect performance any?

2) Can i safely disable my page file with 16GB of RAM?

3) Windows 7 Premium (64bit of course) says it can handle a maximum of 16GB of RAM, so it will use ALL of that right? Not just 15GB like 32bit OS use only 3GB when having 4GB?

4) Are DDR3 RAM prices expected to go up any time soon? I remember when RAM prices skyrocketed back in the DDR2 days and we were all kicking ourselves in the butt for not buying em when they were cheap!😛

5) DDR3 will be used with Haswell CPUs next year right? DDR3 is here to stay for a long while yea?

Thanks in advance for any answers and feedback! cheers!

Looser timings will obviously affect performance, but it's unlikely that you'd notice. Also, keep in mind that crucial's ballistix sport 2x8 is 1600 9 9 9 24 1.5v, and is quite affordable at around $120. I have two of the kits (one is in use), and it's been problem free so far.

Also, never disable your page file. You can reduce it, but never disable it.

The obvious reason for looser timings is that it is more difficult to operate at the same performance when you have a more numerous and or larger chips unless they are more expensive higher density(usually next gen) components.

Unless you know what you are really doing, I wouldn't recommend disabling the paging file. Theres no benefit to micromanaging the paging file anyway with the amount of memory you have.

You're correct that Win7 64bit can make full use of the 16G.

No idea. I'll probably fill out my empty slots since memory is cheap.

I would not disable paging file but I did hard set it to 512mb. Should never need more then that with 16gb ram and saves space on my SSD drive.

At home we run without pagefile for years. Actually we havent used pagefiles since 2006.

Timings doesnt matter, neither does speed CPU wise. And speed is the only thing that affects IGP. Not timings.

DDR4 should start to showup in 2014-2015. DDR3 wont cost more suddenly either.

Haswell and Broadwell supports DDR3.

There was a post with a link to a video in the MS website explaining about pagefile. After seeing that I just keep my page managed by windows.

ok thanks for info. about pagefile, if i have 16gb of ram, won't the page file also be 16gb??? on an SSD that's an insane amount of space.🙁 i should just limit it to 2gb and that's that yea?

On system managed, yes it will.

You can if you want to, just don't disable it.
