I took a western civ class in college (UCSD) that included teaching the Old Testament from an academic view (why the Bible is inconsistent, why some of the stories are repeated, etc). The professor was an incredible lecturer and managed to keep an entire lecture hall of 200 regular college students interested in Old Testament stories. One day, I noticed that the professor read his bible backwards and realized that he was lecturing straight out of a Hebrew version of the Tanakh! He was reading passages and translating them to English without missing a beat.

Biblical Hebrew is different than modern Hebrew in many aspects. I attended a Rabbinical Seminary for quite some time, so I am fluent in both (and ancient Aramaic), but kudos to your professor!
The truth is, once you are fluent in a language, it's not really such a big deal to translate on the fly.

That class was definitely one of the better classes that I took at UCSD even though my major and minor had nothing to do with history. It didn't hurt to have a professor who's so good at lecturing too. He managed to keep the lecture hall packed every day. I think I only missed one class because I had something really important come up. I was just amazed at how easy he made it look. I didn't even notice that he had a different book than everyone else until the middle of the quarter.
