She received a full ride (full paid tuition) at a Grad School for her Full doctorate (5 years) as well as a fellowship with a 1250 stipend a month.

I know the area and it is not that bad(that is when they finish the Marquette interchange in 2008). It is usually pretty smooth sailing in those parts and the cost of living in or aroung Milwaukee is rediculus. If I were you I would look at eventually moving to the west instead of the east. More strategically located between Mil. and Madison and Arrowhead in Hartland is one of the best schools in the state.

Besides all that, the commute is not that bad. I actually just moved 20 min further away from work and love it. I now have a 40 min ride to work and I can use that time for listening to sports highlights, personal reflection, relaxation and smoking a sh!tload of cigs. Although I wouldn't recommend the last one, the first three are well worth the drive. USe the time for you and it will be all good.

i do about 160 mi/day 2-3 days a week, but not all in one go, since i'm driving to and from a couple different places. i drive less the other days, but always over 60 miles. i don't mind the driving so much as the TIME. that's like 3 hours of your day shot sitting in the car. i like to drive, but i could better spend the time doing homework, playing music, being with the gf, or just sleeping. plus that's a lot of gas and scheduled maintenence costs (since you have to take the car to the shop like once a month for scheduled services). also, my insurance went up when they found out i was putting ~30,000 miles a year on my car. the only saving grace is i drive a reliable car, so it has not caused any problems since i started driving so much. actually, it's been more bulletproof than ever (just topped 180,000 miles this week), which is further impressive since i drive the FVCK out of it.

as skoorb said, it gets old fast. i will be moving this summer to cut down my driving, although i'll still drive a lot.

I drive 130 miles a day roundtrip from Northern Nj to Long island NY for a consulting job. Sometimes it takes me 2.5 hrs each way or 5 hrs a day to drive. Thankfully I only have to do this for a few weeks. any longer I would not be able to do it. its just too tiring.

my advice is not to drive 85 miles. find another way.

I used to do 100k each way (Calgary to Banff). I would be exhausted from the drive alone before I even got to the job. Thank god for bevvies on the way home. It's tough though, especially in the winter.

One thing to remember about commuting long-distance; if you have an emergency at home, you have a long drive before you can get there.

I drive 120-200 miles a day. It got old one week into the job. But then I also drive on Hwy 91 in Orange County, so it takes me almost 2 hours to get home.

yikes, ive done quite a bit of driving in the past year (or so i thought) - me and gf live ~110 mi away so only see each other on weekends (thankfully we alternate usually)...i cant imagine doing more than that on a daily basis..
