If you think that someone putting a flag in your yard or hanging a bag with real estate stuff in it is a big deal and actually WORTH complaining about, you must lead a pretty spectacular life with all issues resolved.

This sort of reminds me of the frequent Fark headlines. "Having solved all other problems, congress looks to ban Mario for stereotyping Italians"

this is especially true here in ATOT... people find fault in EVERYTHING, somehow, some way... they find a way! Call it annoying ingenuity...

So, every year my wife spends money to market the area we live in. For the 4th of July she buys hundreds of little American flags you stick in the ground and she goes around our neighborhood and plants one in the lawn of every house. It has her business card on the stick and says compliments of Mrs. JulesMaximus on it. Anyway, she's out doing this today and some nutjob busybody comes along and starts yelling at her telling her she is denegrating the flag and she's littering and she's going to call the cops on her. My wife politely offered to take her off her list and not market her house in the future but apparently that's not good enough.

Great. Why do we always get the whackos???

She's had quite a bit of positive feedback from other residents in the past when she's done this, I don't see what the big deal is.

how is this any different from the spam mail that I get? Just because there's an american flag does that mean its ok?

No, it's OT, you go STFU. There are many hardliners who would love to shoot people who burn flags, etc.

I was brought up knowing that we should defend the honor and integrity of the American flag. Do you know how many people died for what it represents?

what if i don't, you gonna shoot me?

I agree with the Neighbor. I'd call the cops for tresspassing if she does it again. She shouldn't use the flag our soldiers die for to sell her services with.

Someone puts flags out at all our mailboxes every year at this time and I think it looks great with all the flags waving up and down the street. However, the US flag code does say "The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever" and "Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown." So maybe that's where the nutjob is coming from.

Well, I think the "courtesy of" card gets around that "rule". Technically, she's not selling anything or asking you to buy anything-just letting you know who left the flag. The card can be pulled off easily and discarded just leaving the flag.

Wait, so if the FREE IPOD spammers used the AmericanFlag avatar instead of BlackGuy and enabled their profiles, you'd be ok with them posting here? 😕

I mean, they aren't selling anything or asking you to buy anything-just letting you know who left the post. The referal link can easily be removed and discarded, just leaving the URL.

I don't understand why the OP and others in this thread keep making it as seem as though his wife is the victim here. All this is simply unsolicited advertising with a cheap little freebie to make it seem as though the person really cares. Some people don't like that kind of stuff, so don't get offended when they tell you to get off their property and keep your "crap" of their yard.

I personally don't mind the stuff they bring, but see right through it to their true intentions. If I don't like it, it gets immediately thrown away.

She's using the flag to get people to remember her name. She's not asking anyone to buy anything...it's just a flag with a compliments of card attached to the stick.

Whoopty do! So, someone sticks a tiny flag on your lawn once year. Get over it.

I have no problem with using the flag on company material. Hell I work for a defense contractor and make a lot of our marketing material. However, a flag in someone else's yard with company advertising on it is too far in my opinion.

Does she leave flyers on people's windshields and doorknobs, too? Nobody wants people putting advertsiing all over thier property, whether it has a flag or not.

Walking up to someone's door is not tresspassing.

Some idiots using that avatar here, such as powermac4ever, have already desensitized us to that.

One of the things that the American flag represents is democracy, as well as the right to speak out again the government. It is the ultimate irony that a person would die for a cause that supports its opposition (through allowing protest), but I think that is what makes America a great nation.

It's not a company...my wife is self employed. There is a compliments of paper with her business card stapled to it. Nothing more.

Well, of course it is marketing...She isn't just doing this out of the kindness of her heart, she wants to sell houses but I don't see that this is a big deal. Fvck, all kinds of businesses run these big patriotic ad campaigns with the American flag on it for 4th of July weekend. They are clearly using the holiday to make money. Do you people boycott those businesses because they are using the flag and this holiday to try to make money?

Your wife was in the wrong. Deal with it. She was spamming people's property and using the flag in a technically illegal manner.

While I'm not one to call the cops on someone for something like this, you shouldn't be complaining when she was in the wrong.

I'd just take it down and throw it in the trash.
